We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Mr. Benjamin's story puts me in mind of another kind of acceptance. I'm a Theist rather than a Christian, but I am welcome in the Methodist congregation that has embraced my family and me. As for the "affable black man" part -- well, yes, if you're stand-offish and take offense easily, you may find people invite you to less stuff.
I hesitate to call shooting a "boys' skill" or "a man's game" because we have a number of shooters who blast rings around my son and me -- some men, some women, and some quite a bit older than me. We had a mother-son combo recently; son was my age. Mom outshot me. And I'm a decent shooter.
