Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, February 23. 2009Monday morningA Modest Proposal for CO2 emissions. I noticed this too. Obama is running hard for reelection already. The family Bush was always above that sort of thing. Dems are "better" pols: They understand the power game better. 11 states skeptical about the Trojan Ponies in the stim bill. Bobby Jindal on accepting stimulus money:
Some states, like some businesses and individuals, can be blinded by greed. Bobby is the Not Obama. It's not easy to demonize a tall skinny blond-with-a-brain who has a sense of humor, but the MSM has done it - and made her a "controversial" celeb in the process. Love her or hate her, Ann Coulter serves a useful purpose. From Klavan on the Culture:
Ann loves to stir the pot, but most important is that she keeps things "sayable" that others are too timid to say. I always get a kick out of Ann. FYI: Van Morrison's live performance of Astral Weeks, recorded in Nov. 2008, is released this week.

My daughter has told me that Van the Man is playing somewhere in NYC soon. She says tickets are $ 350. I like Van Morrison, but those prices are out of my range. Plus, he can be erratic in a live performance depending on his mood.
What happened to the good old days of $ 2. tickets to see three great bands at the Fillmore. You could scrape the pot residue off the walls, smoke it and get a buzz to boot. I think it was in'69 at the Fillmore East, there was a show with Elton John, Al Kooper, Dr John the Night Tripper, and the headliner was Leon Russell. All piano or keyboard men. Elton John was the opening act because he was new in the US and unknown. This was back when he was good. Great show for 2 or 3 bucks. I wonder what it would cost to see these guys play together today. I'm pretty sure Leon Russell wouldn't be the headliner today.
I saw Leon at the Fillmore East. Same show? Who knows. I saw the Allman Brothers there too.
Yay! Allman Brothers.. I saw them about four times. I still go to YouTube to listen to Duane. I saw The Doors at Forest Hills and the crowd got really restless when they played the eighteen-minute version of "Light My Fire".
Agree with Sean that Van is unpredictable. I saw him twice, and in one show he played sax for about fifteen minutes. Could be I was 'blunted' and only thought it was that long, but it was mesmerizing. But some jerk in the stands kept yelling and it made Van mad so he cut the show short. Just walked off the stage after asking a couple of times for the guy to be quiet. I thought the audience of 30,000 was going to riot. Oh, fun. I could talk about concerts all day long.... :} ` I was a Billy Joel fan in his early years, and I went to a very small place in Georgetown, DC, called The Cellar Door to see him. We were all at little tables drinking away when Joel finally came out. We all cheered as he sat down at the piano and plunked out a few notes. oops... a note was out of tune, and he walked off. We were like..."So what...just play, we don't care." Not to be. They had to find a piano tuner, and the wait was long so we kept the waiters busy and got really sloshed. Finally a crookedy old black man came in led by the hand to the piano. We all cheered and raised our glasses high; when we realized he was blind, we went a little nuts at the 'cool' factor playing out before our glazed eyes. This Stevie Wonder/Ray Charles gnarled old man got things right and to test the baby grand, played a couple of riffs. Good god, we all jumped to our feet and acted like James Brown wannabes. Every time he humbly tried to leave the tiny stage, we started screaming for more. Joel was kind of left standing to the side... no doubt facing his smallest but most difficult audience ever.
` I saw the Allman Brothers at the Fillmore too. I can't remember when, but Duane wasn't with them so it had to be after he died. They were great anyway.
I tried to look up old schedules of Fillmore shows to see if I got some of the shows right, what with time and devalued brain cells, but I couldn't find it on Google. I did find this nostalglic tidbit. http://www.francescolucarelli.com/books/vol3_live.pdf I can't believe I missed that Atlantic City Festival. Summer of '69 was a great time. Some of the best shows were replacement acts. Went to see Jeff Beck, when Rod Stewart was in the group, but for some reason they didn't show. Sam and Dave replaced them and they were terrific. Also saw The Gay Desperatos , a Jamaican steel drum band, and Cab Calloway, Minnie the Moocher, as replacement acts. I don't know how Bill Graham got these top named acts as replacements so quick. He must have been a great manager. Meta ... My husband and I used to go to a place called Blues Alley in Georgetown D.C. when we were courting back in 1970. Great jazz and blues then. Fond memories... Do you happen to know if it's still there?
Marianne Well, since were telling concert stories.... I went to see Jesse Winchester in a small club in the Village. We were sitting at a small table and everyone seemed to be staring and smiling at me. I felt like a star of sorts. It turns out that Gilda Radner was sitting behind me. I guess they really didn't love me.
Went to see Cat Stevens at Gaelic Park, in the Bronx, and I jumped the fence separating the audience from the stage. The security people said: "Oh its you". I must of looked like someone working there. Anyway I sat just off stage behind Cat for the whole concert. I told my friends later and none of them believed me. When he left the stage he smiled and said: "How ya doin man". I guess thats the closest I've been to a terrorist. Talking Heads. UF Bandshell. 1983(?). Possibly the best show I ever saw. Free. Since you can't divide by zero...
2nd best, Tom Petty. 1982(?). ConDome. Fourth Row. First show in G'ville since leaving for CA. Even if he was toasted by the end of the night, he deserved it. Marianne,
Blues Alley is cranking hot licks to this day. :) What a fun memory for you. The Cellar Door closed down... but for sure, Georgetown is still the place to go. ` Yeah... saw most of the 'big' groups at one time or another. But like all here would agree the small venues were always the best, I mean sitting in the second row away from Emmylou Harris in 1980 or so... yowsa. She was hot. And her music was damn good too. Then there were several Ry Cooder small club experiences. But the big boxes were good, too. The usual, Beatles, Stones, Zep, Who, Dead, U2, Clapton, Dylan and the Dead, and the Dead, and the Dead, and the Dead... yep, went to a lot of Dead concerts. Lots of fun back in the day.
Anyone who praises Ann Coulter is demonstrably a brain-dead idiot and a shameless, disgusting reprobate. And anyone who quotes that sort of praise, and then admits to getting a "kick" out of her, is even worse. Shame on all of you. Your time is coming: you will have to put up payment for the terrible destruction you have caused, and are continuing to cause, in this nation.
Adam Smith ... The shame is all yours, bubba. Schoolyard name calling is beyond childish. If you have a substantive criticism we could maybe listen to you for a minute or two. Ann Coulter is well-educated, and probably better read than you are. If I were to offer a criticism of her, it's that she is too tolerant of those who don't demonstrate any adult brain power. There's an old one-liner joke which applies here: "took it like a man, blamed it on his wife." In this case, you are blaming Ann for all of your own shortcomings, both in political policy and in plain good manners. Ad hominem criticism is the last refuge of those who won't think. Or can't.
Marianne Adam... I don't believe you're for real. Surely you're just attempting to stir up controversy here at MF. I mean... "put up payment". What's that, a lamppost reference? You better bring a lunch friend... that battle will be long and hard.
Adam smith
Glad to know Ann Coulter has the ability to bend you out of shape You are probably aware she has more gonads & smarts than anyone you could name.. she's easy on the eyes to boot She would have no problem letting the smoke out of the well programed robot Obama Model 2009 and would probably have you for desert . I hope you have matured by the time she runs for President so she can count on your vote. . By the way ... since a lot of us are feeling feisty this morning, isn't anyone going to comment on the lame-o annual Oscar orgy of unjustifiable self-congratulation? As usual, they patted themselves on the back so much, they almost fell down.
These folks are supposed to be entertainers, for God's sake! What's entertaining about listening to long lists of thank-yous to folks we none of us know or want to know? For films that many of us don't particularly like. Acted in by actors we don't like either. This is like football players jumping around self-celebrating for finally pulling off a play that they're being paid millions of dollars to do. I'm baffled. Marianne The Grateful Dead, the Grateful Dead, and so on.....
While you all are reminiscing about concerts a tad bit before my time, I too became a fan of the music of the Dead. The fusion between blues, jazz and rock is something that always appealed to me. The Grateful Dead was the original jam band. Adam,
Do you have a point? I would also like to know if you have ever actually read The Wealth of Nations. Thanks No, I didn't see it. But I do want to take this opportunity to say that I know how hard I make it to appreciate me often. I really do. Thank you.
Hahaha... what the hell is that about KRW? Are you pulling our collective legs in the manner of an oh so thankful Sally Fields? You're a hell of a lot more cogent and entertaining than those folks whose actions Marianne so accurately described above.
Sorry MM, no comments on the occasion from here... the only Oscars I watch are on the way back and forth from my study to the kitchen as I pass by the TV. Jerry could spin a riff for sure... they all could, really.
I'm looking for a job as a troll like adam smith. You guys wouldn't mind if I parked my ass here at Maggie's and every once in a while said some inane left wing comment and then you guys could set me straight. I could probably get hired through Acorn's public relations dept and get paid with some of the bailout money.
Smitty, she's a blonde and a valuable one to the cause.
Maybe, if ya were specific in yall's flame ya might convince someone that yall are not. Not a blonde. One of those eleven sceptical states has a Governator, who was supported by Sean Hamity, as i recall, who is ready to pig out on all the money the Governors of States who will to refuse Mudboy's bribe.
Schwarzenegger turns out real pretty as Mudboy Hussein's girly-man. Willie Nelson's picnic in the Texas heat.
best way to stay cool...take off your shirt. KRW,did you get your car? Belvedere and Gray Goose are the best vodka's.
Man Jappy... the 65 Belvedere coupe with the 383 and four speed Hurst. Hell of a car.
Oh... you're talking about vodka. Sorry. Don't pick on the Adam Smith troll. It's stoopid and those kind are wicked entertaining.
Adam Smi----th, I have a picture of you... :-P@ss. reminiscin,..., best '70s shows in hartford were at dillon stad/colts park, hard to believe I saw all 3 in same show: the kinks, the doors (sans morrison) & the beachboys,..... near riot due to rain delay. lots 'o bottles thrown at the stage.
Yes, jappy. Channeling Sean Penn, he being a limousine lib, I was able to get a nice ride.
Isn't Grey Goose french? Wouldn't touch the stuff. A former Soviet military officer once informed me that the Poles make the best vodka. I figgered he should know and I've found him to be correct for the most part. |
