Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Philo Thursday, June 16. 2005Gay Patriot's Ordeal Gay Patriot, an excellent anonymous blogger, has been on our blogroll since the beginning, but it is only now that we realize what has been going on with him. LGF had the story in March, and now Gay Patriot tells part of the story of harassment by left-wing activists. It is an ugly story, judging from what his post implies. Schiavo We hated the entire Schiavo story, but RWNuthouse has written a very thoughtful retrospective on the whole thing. Worth your attention. And, for balance, BlameBush has some tasteless black humor on the same subject: Malicious rhetoric from right-wing polemicists like the Pope has done serious damage to the Right to Die crusade, but there's still a glimmer of hope for those longing for death - either their own, or of a loved-one whose continuing existence has become an inconvenience to everyone. Read entire. Too Cool If only Samuel Pepys had the internet. He would be thrilled to know that you can follow his diary daily or weekly at The Diary of Samuel Pepys. Don't miss the June 14th entry, about a hanging. This is the right way to read his wonderful diary, a day or two at a time. Carnival of History Blogs Banning Spanking, Again Massachusetts, and now Canada. What are these people thinking? In MassRight The Cuyahoga Valley Land Grab Thompson describes his first disillusionment with the Federal Govt, on a conservation issue, in Thompson Thursday LyricsYou say you love me Dylan, from Most Likely You'll Go Your Way (and I'll Go Mine) Wednesday, June 15. 2005400th Anniversary of Don Quixote This masterwork of western literature holds up very well today, and yes, I read it recently - for the first time. A contemporary of Shakepeare (and thought to have been familiar with Shakespeare's work), Cervantes fought, and was wounded, in the epic sea battle of Lepanto, which held off Islam's last effort to invade the west - until now. A piece in the NYT.

Austin Bay having a better time than you are, right now.
QQQQ"The past is never dead; it's not even past." William Faulkner Tuesday, June 14. 2005Like Recycling Makes you feel virtuous, but it goes to the same darn landfill. Just like money to Africa. Mudcat tries to return country folk to the Dem fold Well, I'd be happy to hunt or fish with this old boy, but as the future of the Dems, I dunno. In Weekly Standard: Click here: Hunting Bubba A moving and touching piece on Grace, by Warren. On Loving God, and the levels of Loving God, by Real Ministries QQQQIt works in practice, but it doesn't work in theory. Anon. Monday, June 13. 2005A Jackson Verdict Thank goodness. We don't have to hear about that any more. (NG on all)
How do you solve this one? The dams in the Columbia River system provide cheap power but destroy the wild salmon. The farm-raised salmon, cheaper than 10 years ago, is great stuff, but how do you balance economics and conservation? These require Solomonic, or should I say, Salmonic, decisions. Iranian Blogs There are two blogs which I follow for the evolving (one hopes) situation in Iran: Regime Change Iran and Student Committee for Democracy in Iran. One thing is clear, which is that Iran is neither ideologically nor culturally insulated from the rest of the world, despite the efforts of the govt. The Endless Tour Dylan Reviews in the NYT: The most recent from his current tour here: Click here: Dylan Gives the People What He Wants - New York Times , and the previous one from his short tour with Merle Haggard here: Click here: The New York Times: Premium Archive Stock Up on Canned Goods (ie beer) 74 mph breezes. Hurricane season is already upon us, and lovers of strong weather get excited by watching tropical breezes from the African coast evolve into monster storms. It's not that storm lovers want to see people hurt, but that they find the power of nature both exhilarating and humbling. It is like feeling the hand of God. We follow the tropical patterns on the NOAA hurricane site, which provides transcriptions of the survelliance reports from NOAA's G-lV and P-3 aircraft. What a great job those pilots have. Very cool. Stormtrack is a storm enthusiast who was clearly disappointed by Arlene's half-hearted performance. Academic Freedom What does it mean, exactly? Confederate Yankee has the details, with the Shortell situation as the case in point.
Dr. Bob clearly has a thing about bridges, both the architecture and the engineering. He has a fine series, with lots of photos, on the construction of his local suspension bridge. That's a lot of polpo. Why a photo of a Pacific Giant Octopus? Read it.

Congrats Congrats to the Bird Dog nephew Andy, whose graduation from Pittsfield (MA) High School we attended yesterday, at Tanglewood. Darn good acoustics for the fine HS band. Summer Reading
"Though he never glimpses the rare, regal Ivorybill wodpecker, James Kilgo's lifelong urge to "go deep" has grown into this thoughtful book of autobiographical sketches...This is a book not just for hunters, birdwatchers, or naturalists. It's for everbody who senses, or perhaps remembers, that the woods have more to offer than a splotch of shade on a deck." Image from Peterson's Field Guide
