We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
From an Reuters story today: "Islamist militants in Somalia took steps on Saturday to attack pirates behind the world's biggest hijack and rescue the captured Saudi Arabian supertanker, an Islamist spokesman said."
Who do you root for in this situation? The terrorists are using a religious rationale for recapturing the Saudi tanker, but they are clearly jealous of the success of the local pirates.
Maybe it's best just to sit back and watch the game?
Grab some popcorn and beer, sit back and watch the P's and T's knock the hell out of each other. When the dust settles send in a coalition of the tired-as-hell-of-these-idiots to mop up the stragglers.
I mean good God, we have a Navy that can lay waste to half the planet and we're dancing with these morons. Let's get in the game people. It's time to remember how to sort the good guys from the bad.
Umm, is it just me or is this not a hard call to make? Obviously anytime your enemies fight your enemies, you want a long protracted battle that weakens the ultimate victor the most but certainly we'd want the pirates to prevail here. The jihadis have an ideology to propagate and any victory that portrays them as being anything remotely successful is a bad thing. I would hope that we would be looking at using this as an opportunity to hit these jihadis, both physically and politically (though covertly), while they are exposed.
As for us (US) being actively involved in the pirate thing, this should be left to the Europeans since the piracy in this part of the world impacts them more than us. This is another opportunity for the EU to put up or shut up. Why do we let those people get away with criticizing us, and then they sit around with their collective thumbs up their arses waiting for the US to solve their problems? Bosnia, Africa, and now this piracy thing are all problems where they could take the lead.
"war is deception"
"i have been made victorios through terror"
taqiyya - 'lying in the futherance of the cause of Islam is legitimate.'
Somalia - wiki
the "gov't" is currently immersed in what i read as a 'civil-war' between tribal-warlord factions and the Islamic Courts Union which wants to establish Sharia law over some portion of the population and territory.
WHO allows these pirates to operate comfortably from their territory?
could the Somalian 'gov't' be receiving
some portion of the hijack-ransoms?
The AP is keen on the economic opportunity piracy is providing the poor Somali's.
My hunch is, yes, there is some very generous redistribution of wealth going on. Piracy has always been among the highest callings for Muslims... helped give birth to the Marines when they declared war on the young U.S back in 1802.
