Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, November 10. 2008Monday morning linksh/t, Dr. Sanity (who is taking a blogging break): Last week, a friend recommended this Lumix (Panasonic) camera to me. Also last week, Insty recommended another Lumix, and Samiz posted on the Lumix G-1. Something must be going right at Lumix. But not so with the US automakers. Dems press for auto rescue for GM and Chrysler. You can call it stupid, but it's not stupid - it's political. Surber says: "...if failure is going to be rewarded, that is what you are going to get." (Kudlow commented last week that these aren't auto manufacturers: they are pension and health care companies that occasionally make a car or two.) Another failing biz: carbon emission rights, which are a joke anyway. Mr. Free Market presents a better idea: Carbon Debits! Unfortunate phrasing: "...ready to take power and begin to rule" Good grief. Where have all the bigots gone? John Tierney We have joked about having our own home-made nuke generator in the farm basement, but something similar is actually in the works. This sure beats windmills. Do our current methods of nominating national candidates make sense? I have never thought they did. James Caesar: The Presidential Nominating Mess (h/t, No Left Turns). One quote:

I think Mr Nota ( none of the above) won in a landslide, if he decided to run. A lot of people, chose not to vote, or register to vote. Mr Mutt, they say is going to have an immediate effect on helping the economy. Key words " they say". I'm going to put my head in a vise, until BD gets me a pony.
Is Joe Biden now Mr Jeff ? Jappy,
Don't hold your breath for that pony. BD might give you a CD with some nice chamber music on it and a dead duck. I'll give you a pony and you can say with stars in your eyes: "OH.. My little pony!" I noticed that the dems are putting out all sorts of news releases about how Obama is charging out of the gate and will do all these things straightaway. GITMO will be moved onshore and will have its own judge/jury/trial system. He's going to give 25billion to the car people and fix healthcare and the environment. Now that's ruling if you ast me. Good luck on that, Obama. Hope we don't have a terrorist attack or a foreign crisis to get you off-track. Oh, Rahm Emanuel was on some news show and they asked him a specific question about how Obama planned to fix one of the above ..... oh man... four years of that guy's obfuscating and maybe even MSNBC will turn on him. ` Re: cameras. (Excuse blackberry typos, from the Misty Mountain Fortress sans broadband)I am no expert, but 30,000 pix a year or so have given me the chance to see what helps or hinder a rank amateur like myself take better shots.
The Lumix is good I hear also (I think it has Leica lens but camera snob hubby tells me Leica's aint what they used to be. Maybe just sour grapes)., but check sensor size and processing upgrades or lack thereof to be sure lotsa megapixels don't translate into noise w lowlight shots. Size really matters. Teeny sensor plus lotsa mp equals noise. But don't let camera store salesman try to sell you old stock with less than 10 mp as you need lotsa mp to crop when shooting that far off bird or wolf or bathing beauty! There is no substitute for taking out a friend's camera and looking at your ensuing pix. It's subjective but also skill dependent. Not being the greatest photographer, I appreciate bells and whistles that an Ansel Adams or a current pro can do without. For an amateur, fast startup and autofocus, passable low light shots without flash and image stabilization are godsends. Freedom from the tripod! After extensive field testing I now say forget about Olympus point and shoots despite their reasonable price and features. The xd format memory is a PITA when transferring photos or running out and driving 15 miles to the nearest hamlet and needing to buy or borrow a new one quickly tho some now have a microsd card adapter. GAAA. Regular SD is the standard for budget cameras, and olympus shd get w the program. , (tho their small dslrs are appealing, lightweight and full featured but have SMALL lcd displays whioch is BAD for middleaged eyes). My Costco-bought 10 mp olympus waterproof stylus 1050 SW wh is shockproof and freeze proof and image stabilized takes cruddy pictures, barely better (tho higher resolution) than my blackberry phone. Well, I exagerrate, but nowhere near as good as another recent costco purchase a Nikon 51 (I think) a 9 mp point and shoot image stabilized thing I got the puppy for college snaps when a dslr is obtrusive. The Nikon gets awesome pix for something its size. The Olympus point and shoot will tolerate falling into a mud puddle which is where you will leave it after it takes 3 seconds to turn on and ditto to focus, in which time your prey or beloved has vanished from view. Okay for stationery targets and bright daylight. As far as image quality goes, no sub for a dslr yet. The nikon d80 is better and my current love, the nikon d300 is best! The nikon D90 wh has most of the featured of the d300 but a ratchet down (consumer model) takes hi res videos, cool! Camera snobs sneer, but people w families and cute pet antics wd enjoy. Husband growling in background "Nikon good, Canon cheaper and better! His view. But DSLRs are rather obvious when taking paparazzi. shots of family, friends who say "Point that damn thing at me again and I'll give it to the dog for a chew toy!" Don't get me started on which camera I want next; (hint: full frame digital, LOTS more mp) If you are set on a point and shoot as your main camera, you might try the canon G10 also tho I personally am pretty set on Nikon. But G10 has best features of point and shoots w serious picture quality tho about 400-500 so pricey. Meta and jappy ... Rahm Emanuel is Mr. O's most troubling appointment yet. The man is a killer pit bull without any restraint on him. He is malignant narcissism gone wild. I guess the Democratic powers-that-be felt that O needed some iron in his spine from somewhere. But they overdid it, as usual. I wonder if we are beginning to see the Democratic party's underlying plan. Elect and empty suit and you can pour anything into the suit that you want to. That's truly scary.
Marianne "Elect and empty suit and you can pour anything into the suit that you want to. That's truly scary."
No kidding, Marianne. Everyone talks about Obama's intellect and his brilliance, but I've never seen it. If you want to get conspiratorial about it, all of Obama's 'present' votes in the Senate may well have been part of the plan, as well, if you tend to think this has been in the making that long. I still think whatever grand plans they have will not come to fruition without major trouble. Government moves slowly and resistance is high. That's probably why they're crowing about coming out of the starting gate with a bang - while the cult is still intact. ` Yes, I'm working under the three foot stomping, throw a tantrum rule so I figure I have, oh let's not quibble, lets just say a few.
There is a very nice gentleman who may come here as he has had his fill of his current blog and I suggested MF for best all around. He goes by the name of Bobal, a farmer and a gentleman. Thanks Meta, I'm back...I was simply trying to prove that there's no fool like an old fool .....
My lumix is 3 years old and going strong. Love it. Just don't drop it.
