We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Clematis

This is Clematis Henryi. I have just ordered one to grow over an arbor.

In my experience, these are tricky plants and slow to establish themselves. When they are unhappy, there's not a damn thing you can do about it. When they are happy on a sunny fence, they are great. They supposedly like their feet cool, shaded, and mulched.

I've tried everything but, like people, they just go their own way and follow their own path, whether it leads to heaven, hell, or Paramus.

I also like Sweet Autumn Clematis, which is a tougher, more forgiving variety.

Don't do it!

I don't know about New England clematis, but all the clematis in Virginia is extremely happy. Hedonistically happy. It's the mid-eastern states' Kudzo. It grows beneath driveways 30 feet wide and snuffles underground and shows up wherever it feels like it. I planted some for my trellis, and it not only completely covers the trellis, it grabs you at night and makes you think a spider is on you. Then you have to dance around like an idiot having a forest bug seizure.

MY clematis is growing in my far-off neighbor's yard. Scary stuff. It's called 'Darth Clematis' here in Virginia.

In my experience stern looks while holding nice, sharp clippers does the trick.

hahaha. Forget it. Nothing kills it. It thrives on dirty looks and divides exponentially after a clipping. Clematis is like, "Oh! Snap! Clipper sex."
