We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Nice selection of apples. There was a time when even the corporate supermarkets would stock a variety of apples, including ones that are not here, such as Northern Spy and Empire. Now, there's half dozen varieties at most at these emporiums of corporate banality looking like wax fruit. One has to go to a local farmer's market or independent produce store.
This ol' up country Yankee votes the Mac numero uno so long as you have 'em right off the tree; Macs quickly lose their tart and tangy character so fresh is a must. Sorta like corn on the cob in that respect where you shuck those babies between the stalk and the steam pot! Time between the tree/stalk to pallet is critical. For apple pies, crisps, etc. Northern Spy cannot be beat, very tart and tangy, nice offset to the sweet (along with cranberries). Didn't see Northern Spy on BD's very appetizing post. You can still find Spies high up on VT hillsides where farms once flourished more than a century ago, and some of the growers still have a few cultivated trees in their orchards. Next on my list come Golden Delicious, Granny Smith's and Braeburns, mainly for their staying power through the winter. My favorite, though, is a cran/apple crisp made with Northern Spies for the ultimate in tart/sweet treats.
There's a new variety just beginning to produce here, called the Sweet Tango. It's a Honeycrisp-Zestar cross. It's fantastic (I'm a zestar fan, but not a Honey Crisp fan), but since it's a "premium" apple, expect to pay top dollar.
