We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Finish your peas? Who ever made up the idea that vegetables are "healthy," anyway? There's no medical evidence for that at all. Now, too many vegetables shrink your brain. Soup, wine, meat, potatoes and bread is what people need. And pie. OK, maybe an occasional apple, or veggie sauteed in olive oil and garlic - but only for the taste.
Regarding the Sharia Law courts in England I almost lazily passed this on to friends accompanied by vitriol. But i then read the article as perhaps others should have. HM Courts have been enforcing the arbitration decisions of sharia courts. There is nothing especially insidious about arbitration. It amounts to a freedom to contract out of the legal rights provided to you by the state, which is absolutely libertarian. The decisions will only be enforceable to the extent they comply with all the laws regarding the enforceability of contracts in English law, i.e. no beheadings, stonings, amputations etc.
There are Organizers and there are organizers. In the later case, would be those college students and nurses who came down here to help folks learn how to avoid hookworm and pellagra, the church women who came down and taught people to read, and so on. Little "c" organizers who sought no glory or political favor.
However, over the past 20 years or so, big "C" Organizers seem to be motivated by glory, political power and have become the big city power brokers they used to avoid being with.
Great link on wreck...from my home here in Liverpool I can see where the css Alabama was built. As for sharia in britain...one step closer to the trouble that will end all pretence at a multicultural society living in peace.
"When Yaacov Isaacs ran into a dispute over the financial terms of a contract, he turned to someone he believed could resolve the issue cheaply, quickly and fairly--a rabbi.
Isaacs, owner of a Beverly Hills health care company, is one of a growing number of Orthodox Jews who have turned to the Rabbinical Council of California's Beit Din, or "House of Judgment," to arbitrate disputes under Jewish law."
