We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
ERIC S. RAYMOND: Timing the Entitlements Crash. "The fundamental problem is that income-transfer programs (and the interest service on the debt purchased to keep them running) are spending wealth in higher volumes than the economy can actually generate, and demand for that spending is rising faster than the economy is growing. Thus, raising tax rates is no longer a way out, if it ever was." Remember, if something can't go on forever, then it won't.
Sowell's essay is brief and excellent. The progressive vision of possible worlds is indeed a lovely one. If only they worked.

Remember in '95 Mike Tyson fought Peter McNeeley? Hurricane McNeeley came out at the bell looking for a K.O. because that would be his only hope. He was running into Tyson and swing wildly, so Tyson gave up trying to box and joined McNeeley in an 89 second bar room brawl. McNeeley's manager threw in the towel after two knock-downs so his boy wouldn't get killed.
