We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
If Iíd had a crystal ball a few years ago, I might have asked a few more questions when Sarah decided to join the PTA. It wouldnít have mattered, though; when my wife starts talking about reform, corruption and making government work for the people, itís just best to get out of the way.
Iíve been an imperfect servant of my country for many years. But I have been her servant first, last and always. And Iíve never lived a day, in good times or bad, that I didnít thank God for the privilege.
John McCain, Sept 4, 2008
I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn't my own man anymore. I was my country's.
I was listening to the McCain speech and thinking I couldn't have stood up to that kind of torture. I'm really into that pain avoidance thing. When I was in the Navy, there was all sorts of snarky things going around about the other services (still is), but the one I (partially) remember went something like:
In the Air Force, if captured, Officers will give name, rank, and serial number. Airmen will give name, rank, serial number, numbers and type of aircraft, how many, what weapons, passcodes, whatever, just don't hurt me.
All snark aside, any man will break under extreme torture. Some will give up and die. Some will give up and retreat into madness. And some will use it to solidify their character. I was proud of JM standing up there and admitting he broke. But he wasn't beaten by that, he used his torture to solidify his character and go out and do something, anything, to make a difference.
It made me proud to be an American. (A lot of the rest of the speech I thought was too boilerplate stump speech material....but after the previous night's performance by Sarahcuda, what else could he do?)
I notice that the lead story on Drudge this morning is that Oprah refuses to have Sarah Palin on her show. she says that she thinks the interview might damage Obama's campaign. You bet. And Sarah Palin needs Oprah "like a fish needs a bicycle," to quote a famous early feminist who is still alive and still whining.
Grow up, ladies. How can you get old and still not grow up?
