Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, August 11. 2008Tuesday morning linksA cold August. We have never had such a cool and comfortable August in my memory up here. Never used my A/C once this month. "Organic" foods nothing more than a "lifestyle choice." Duh. The terrible Calvo case and the dopey war on drugs. Bainbridge. Marching boldly into the past: Chavez sees Cuba as a model. Morales is big on "change" too. "Change" means government running the businesses. Good luck, morons. Accountability America is nuts. This is beyond hardball: It's like ACORN. When the economy slows, retail pulls back. When the economy expands, they always overbuild. Greenspan, via Mankiw: It has become hard for democratic societies accustomed to prosperity to see it as anything other than the result of their deft political management. In reality, the past decade has seen mounting global forces (the international version of Adam Smith’s invisible hand) quietly displacing government control of economic affairs.... The danger is that some governments, bedevilled by emerging inflationary forces, will endeavour to reassert their grip on economic affairs. If that becomes widespread, globalisation could reverse – at awesome cost. It's not all Russia's fault. CSM. Maybe not, but I underestimated their goals. They are taking over the country. Not trustworthy people, the Russians. Georgia headed back to Russian domination. Wolfson: Edwards made Hillary lose. Probably true. What a strange world. Mark Penn had the best, if dishonest, strategy for Hillary: roots and values. Worrisome signs for Obama. Politico. Related: Who wrote this for him? No doubt intended to make him look substantial. Related: It's OK to make jokes about Obama now. Related: slobbering acolyte says Obama is a movie star, not a rock star. Related: Dreams of a Denver nightmare. A quote from the latter:
Related, from Why isn't Obama winning?
Related: More Obama problems: His definition of sin. It's not my definition. Which "values" is he referring to? Another problem: List Obama's accomplishments. Brits in Basra now say: "While we had a strategy of evasion, the Americans just went in and addressed the problem.” Iraq The Model terms it a betrayal. From Junk Science:
Nevertheless, these bozos are already planning for big sea level rises. Better yet, just plan for extinction. Plan how? Photo on top: Union Station, 1921, via Shorpy. It's a lot more fun now.

A cold August. We have never had such a cool and comfortable August in my memory up here. Never used my A/C once this month. More proof of Global Warming! Just how much more proof is needed for you damnable deniers! :)
It feels more like September than August down here in Gawgia. Spent a couple of weeks in July shivering in Northern Minnesota. Global warming my ass. Wish it were true as ice age would be bad for lake property values in Minnesota.
The CSM is completely wrong. Russia is 100% to blame for the conflict in Georgia. Back in the Soviet days, they settled ethnic Russians in Georgia in order to offset any possible Georgian nationalism. Once The Soviet Union broke up and Georgia became an independent democratic republic, the Russians encouraged these people to make trouble, and then protected them – even granted them Russian citizenship.
The fact that Georgia could not control its own territory and borders kept it out of NATO and the EU (as the Russians had intended). It was obvious to me that the Russian “re-action” was thoroughly planned (Ralph Peters says the same in today’s NYPost). I watched the U.S. Army and Marine Corps spend months preparing for Desert Storm. If Mexico invaded Texas tomorrow, it would take us a week to get our mech units there into battle formation – and we are far better than the Russians at logistics. The Russians had two divisions in Georgia in two days. This was a planned invasion and destruction of a democracy. The Cold War is back on and we just lost the first battle. No, it's not the Cold War. Just ordinary amoral Russian nationalism/imperialism.
Semantics. The result is the same. Either Western Europe and the U.S. stand up to Ivan and stops it, or every country on Russia's western border will become a satellite of Moscow.
The bear is out of the cage and the only way to stop it, as you say, is to stand up to it. It stalks with a small appetite for now but is licking its chops in anticipation of January 20th.
Then there is Spengler's take on the matter...
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Central_Asia/JH13Ag01.html which I think suffers from lack of a broader perspective. H/T Insty Dragon rising, Bear on the prowl. Looks like Poland all over again. NJsoldier is right, defintely a planned strike. Food for thought. Russia likes high oil prices. Glad to see our VP canadiate condem the attack. Where the hell is our future Pres. I hope he's not in the hayloft with the Sex Goddess.
Sean, Dam cool in Dover, NH, and plenty wet!!! Anyone is an improvement on cousin Itt. I know you'll do a great job at Homeland Security. : )

I fear I may be called upon to play a larger role than is normal for a VP, should the slate be elected, as the Pres. may be busy making a lot of hay while the sun shines.

My appetites are not small, never have been, and Jappy will be bringing you a missive from me soon. You are the bear, we all know it and that's why we hired you as Vice-President - to hell with elections; and you have my permission to lick your chops in anticipation. ` THE WIFE,
With due consideration for the proper chain of command I await your missive with slavering chops.

Yesterdays high temp 62 degrees, up from a low of 48 degrees earlier in the morning. Feels like autumn is arriving a little too soon. I wonder if all that artic ice has melted yet. Last I heard there was a half a million sq kilometers more ice than last year. Didn't see that on AOL news.
A Fox News anchor pointed it last night as somebody tried to blame something on Global Warming in the artic.
Nice job ,in sending two more carrier groups to the Persian Gulf. When will the blockade of Iran begin? After or before the election?
Global warming, my dears, is not caused by carbon dioxide increases. They follow global warming, not cause it, follow it sometimes by a gap of 75 years or more. Don't tell Al, though. He'll have a hissy and retreat into his basement again -- and God knows what he'll emerge with next time. Meanwhile, the globe is cooling, and has been doing so since 1998. And if you guys have any property in northern Canada, like Ellsmere Island, now might be the time to sell it.
And by the way, friends. All that summer heat you aren't having up North ... we've had steady temperatures of 95 and higher every day since May 1st down here in Houston. We'd love to send you some. Personally, I'm getting tired of it, and the air conditioning bills are pretty high. And Dolly and Edouard have already paid us a visit, and it isn't even the middle of August yet. Actually, every area of the United States has its own weather problems, but it's still the best country in the world and I love it. Marianne Me too. Weather is just one of those things people like to talk about.
