We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Apparently, ol' TH didn't get the memo that the subject of AGW is "dead". And if he wants to focus on children, possessive parents aren't even a blip on the map compared to the damage done by the NEA. Obviously, Neal Boortz isn't one of Tiger's daily reads. Neal claims, and I agree, that if the subject is the future of our country, nothing is more dangerous and destructive than the NEA.
Here's the question: An article like this assumes the children are all innocent little lambs and it's the cruel, evil helicopter parents who are doing all the damage. But what if it's the child who's subconsciously signaling the parents that it needs extra attention because of the inane 'feel-good' education it's getting?
1. The child gets a trophy cup just for playing in the soccer game, never mind who won.
2. He completes his first task at camp, doesn't get any special recognition and bitterly calls home.
3. The parent calls the camp and demands to know why the child is being made to feel unappreciated.
4. TigerHawk writes an article on the parent calling the camp.
We didn't "raise" a generation of helicopter parents. If parents are more possessive these days, I'd be looking for root causes, and root causes in regards to children start with the NEA.
