We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The ethanol scam and gas prices, plus the missing campaign issue

Who knew that pandering pols put a 54-cent tariff on imported ethanol for the benefit of domestic corn farmers and ethanol producers? Story here.

The ethanol scam industry would not exist without subsidies (which we pay for - via our income taxes, not at the pump) and protective tariffs. Of course, federal and state taxes on a gallon of gas add plenty too.

And this leads me to the big missing campaign issue: Dems refuse further drilling, block refineries, block nuclear and, due to their greenie alliance, want to force fuel prices higher to reduce usage. Yet, at the same time, they complain vehemently about energy costs and want to punish the oil companies. It's nonsense, unless you believe in fairies.

The Dems are selling fairy tales about energy - and about other things too.

And then they haul in the oil execs for a dog and pony show to show the people how concerned they are. You're right, this is a campaign issue McCain should jump on as everyone's mind is on gas prices now. There's plenty of evidence of the Dems refusal to allow exploration, drilling, refineries or nuke plants.

Funny how the greenies don't seem to care when developers cut down acres and acres of forest or drain wetlands to build yet another shopping mall or housing development but go crazy when anyone suggest drilling for oil in remote sites or the gulf.

It will be a great campaign issue - IF - McCain can get himself on the right side of it. If he pulls his old move of agreeing with everything the Dems say, there is no issue. Just us poor saps trying to drive to work.

Expect to keep a tally and compile a long, long list of ghost issues for McCain. It will be a road map to defeat.

First you have to separate all the stuff he agrees with the Dems about, and the stuff he's just not saying.

Agrees with Dems: Border, "torture", CO2, that pesky first amendment, (submissions welcome here)

Will not make an issue of (yet or ever): Life, Energy, Islam (or his opponent), that pesky 2nd amendment, judges, taxes, come to think of it, just what is his platform?

He can't be waiting for the press to make his case for him, is he?

What IS the democrat's platform re: energy? Do they have one? err....do they have one that's productive?

It's long past time to drill and start building lots of nuke plants. This is a make-or-break for me and I agree with #1 that it could be THE election issue.

Didn't we see this coming like ... 30 years ago??? This whole situation is sickening and maddening...grrrrrrr.

True that, Phil. A bad record is worse than no platform at all, and a bad president is worse than no president at all. I guess I'm too pedestrian to understand the nuances of McCain's reach across (around) with the Liberals who are intent on "socializing" our America.

I'm looking into a transfer for a few years to the international division of my employer; the far east looks good at the moment.

twolane ... unfortunately you're wrong about "a bad president being worse than no president at all." The way things are set up here in the US of A, we can't have "no president at all." The Founding Fathers nixed that option. A President will be elected in November, whether we like it or not. If he's bad, it will be our fault for electing him and enabling him and his party to set about destroying the country. As citizens neither you nor I can sit on our hands and pout in November, because we wanted someone better, closer to our ideals. It will be in part our fault if we get an ignorant, conceited scold with little knowledge of history and less of government. That's inescapable.

By the way, I have friends working in the Far East right now, and it's far from ideal. I'd think twice, if I were you.

Yes, I've heard this refrain before... can't think of where... Hmmm...

So every time someone points out that the emperor has no clothes, a chorus of "better a naked emperor than an enemy within" rings out. I trust AMERICA more than I trust McCain, when looking to the future. Doesn't stop me from stating the simple truth...

Fear is not a strategy. Truth is not pouting, nor is taking offense to the fool's choice we now have. There is no shoulda-coulda in the belief that we are holding an empty bag, and pretending it's better than a bag of shit.

If one was cynical one would assert that this is a master plan of the Dems. Drive up energy costs through ruinous policy than hold up 'Big Oil' as a scape goat to deflect blame...then make a case of nationalizing 'Big Oil'. It would/will fail spectalurly, but much damage will be done in the mean time.

Phil, that's alot of me-too hooey. Consult the ACU and On the Issues and you'll get McCain's conservative voting record, which is to the right of the party. I think he's just a little ornery or awkward in how, when he defers, he rubs it in a little. But let's stop bellyachin' - we got a choice between Fast Barry the Bolshevik, with just too many Muslim friends, or an honest war hero who has for a long time served and honored his country. You can't blame him for trying to get the requisite support he needs from centrists and independents to become President; hell, Reagan did that too. And i think you'll see with a McCain administration that real conservatives like Fred Thompson will play a valuable role.

Being to the right of a bunch of check pantsed Republicans is pretty easy, doesn't mean much.

Fred Thompson was a red herring. Get your glasses on. You even think "honest" and "politician" in the same breath.

Aint foolin me. If I can pull an election with a few honest words about a POL, I need a new job. November is already, and we are just dancing the dance until then.

Consider the election a referendum on Obama. If you don't like him vote for McAhole. McAhole has got to be the stupidest politician I've ever seen. I try not to read or see or hear anything about what he's saying, otherwise I'll never be able to vote for him in Nov. Phil and anyone of the same mindset, try to do the same otherwise you'll just go crazy.

Yep...I also try to limit my exposure to McCain. He may not be everyone's cup of tea but he's an INFINITELY better choice than Hussien the Hustler. BTW, Obama is amazingly bad at off the cuff answers to tough questions. That's a weakness that's got to be exploited. He also seems to be a total retard on issues economic and historical...he's the quintessential empty suit. This country deserves better.
