Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

My first thought on that video image was this is a speculative bubble.
NJ - the article by Vaclav Havel is by Vaclav Klaus. Havel was Klaus' mentor. Great article! Read it.
~~~ That was a good article... plain spoken truth about the larger debate that should be taking place, but isn't.
I thought it was Congress and voters committing economic suicide via "global warming" legislation.
Regarding your question, NJ, I'd say it's somewhat a case of 'preaching to the choir'. I read the whole thing, nodding my head the whole time, but didn't really have anything to add at the end except "I agree" -- which is a tad lame.
If comment numbers are your bag, I'd suggest a different venue. Go write a similar article on DailyKos. I'm sure you'll get lots of comments. :) I didn't read the article by Tiger, but when you're writing to a conservative group and you actually feel the need to list out reasons to vote for the Republican, that says something, doesn't it? The level of disgust is almost beyond words. It's as if the ruling class has adopted the Koranic approach to governance. We, the constituents--the dhimmi, the kaffir, are owed nothing. They do not listen to us and they are under no obligation to be truthful with us. As soon as they are elected, we are cast away and they can go about whatever it is they do.
Republicans of today have very little to do with conservatism. Republicans will probably never again win consistently on the National level and their undoing will be their lame immigration policies. Conservatism: that's another subject. Hey Meta, you got your wish, Jephnol in spandex. Why he dosen't even look like he has 12 beers in him. Real chick getters these two.
Well you've got twelve beers in you... what the hell is my excuse? And where's my walker? Yep, real chick magnets.
I usually only wear that outfit shoo spled. Hick... Sped. Hick. When I (hick) shleep damn it.
hahahahahahaha. ew. ew.
What's with the magnets... you guys looking for young ones with braces? "I gotcha now, Tiffany-Madison!" ha ha ha ... ~~ The un-lemming...
Sorry Jephnol... and perhaps it is my monitor... but there was no detail there.
By the way, some among us did figure out the 'editable' post doo hickey. Very clever of you to be the first. Hmmm, this is interesting. I recreated the animated gif from the post above to run backwards. Do you see the animation in the original post?
Addendum: You see the graphic in 5.2.1.1. as well, right?
Animation is running full speed on my monitor. Oh well... At home it was a static image... here at work it is nothing but the server address, for both images... cool idea though.
Just checked it out on a new machine and all is working well. The gif is working just fine, only backwards. Don't know what gives with your machines. If the original animation is working the rebuild should be working. ISP issues, RAM issues, or firewall--whatever, it's not to big a deal.
Take it easy. We have come to think of prominent public men, be they in government or private industry, as tainted, bottom of the deck dealing swine.
I can think of one who I pray for, feeling that my prayers will be answered where they are no longer needed. Tony Snow. A man I honored. A man who I listened to for reasoned ideas. And now, barring a miracle he will join the angels and we will be one down on the good guy list. I am not the type to get misty eyed for like many of the men here I have seen death in many horrible ways but I am crestfallen over Mr Snow's situation. Dear Lord, if you take this man to your kingdom you will be gaining a wonderful person, and many of us still here can only hope to hear him again. Pax vobiscum. Seconded on Tony Snow.
As for "conservatives." mccain - is that enough? Thirded on Tony Snow. Jeez -- too bad -- what a fighter -- what an upbeat, give it ALL you got, fighter.
Snow is a man of unusual integrity. It's terrible about his illness.
No McCain is not enough, but it is the best option left on the table at this particular time.
Vote McCain this round and work harder to get better conservative local and congressional candidates and a better POTUS candidate for next election. This is a thorny issue for me.
On one hand, we need to keep Obama or Hillary out of the Presidency because that will be an unmitigated disaster for the country. On the other hand, a McCain win will be interpreted as a victory for the country club Rs over the conservative wing and the heads of the party will start ignoring us that much more. On the other hand, (I'm an alien so I get a lot of leeway on the hand thing) there is no way a separate conservative party will ever gather enough votes to matter and thus giving the libs a free reign for decades. Come to think of it wasn't that's what happened the last time the country clubers ran things?' I knew you were an Alien. It wasn't hard to see. Tralfaz = Tralfamadore.
Greetings! Or i guess, since Tralfamadorians always end up where they started, that should be "!sgniteerG" http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=t&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLL,GGLL:2008-19,GGLL:en&q=tralfamadorian I say that if you have not read Victor David Hansens piece today you are missing one of the greatest truisms of our time, I kid you not
VDH You will understand immediately upon reading it it's unequivical truth. Hey Habu, VDH is a good man, so is Tony. I sent a copy of your post on conservatism to my Dad. Thanks for turning me on to Jim Rawles. One good deed deserves another, try out Jim Sinclair @www.jsmineset.com/. Have you seen No Country For Old Men? Please tell me you don't look like that CRAZY dude, because their's no way I'm getting in a cage with a guy that looks like that, unless I'm carrying two loaded .45s. I might be stupid , but I'm not crazy!!!
Oil for thought
Or what's up with oil? China, India, Russia and the Middle East combined, are now consuming more crude oil than the US,burning 20.7 million barrels a day, up 4% from a year ago, according to the IEA. The emerging economies are picking-up the slack in the oil market, more than offsetting a -1.3% contraction in U.S. oil demand to 20.3 million barrels this year. Thus, a mild recession in the Western economies and Japan might not weaken global demand for oil. Economies of big oil-exporters in Russia, Mexico, and OPEC itself are growing so fast that their need for energy within their own borders will limit how much they can sell abroad. Internal oil demand in Saudi Arabia, Russia, Norway, Iran and the United Arab Emirates, grew 6% last year, and their exports declined 3 percent. Mexico’s oil output fell -9% in the first four months of 2008, from the same period a year earlier. If these trends continue, global crude exports could fall by 2.5 million barrels a day by the end of 2010, adding new strains to the global oil market. If crude oil speculators on the Nymex were buying “black gold” as a hedge against the U.S. dollar’s slide against the euro, the #2 reserve currency, then perhaps, traders in London were buying North Sea Brent as a hedge against the British pound’s devaluation against the Euro. The Bank of England engineered the British pound’s sharp devaluation against the Euro, by joining the Fed’s rate cutting spree last November, with three quarter-point rate cuts to 5 percent. The euro soared 17% to 80-pence, while at the same time, North Sea Brent crude oil prices doubled to $130 /barrel. Flipped the other way round, the British pound buys around €1.25, down from €1.50 last summer, making European imports considerably more expensive. For Ivory-Tower economists, the euro’s ascent against the British pound and U.S. dollar, which closely tracked North Sea Brent was just a statistical coincidence. But for crude oil speculators, the sharp devaluations of the pound and U.S. dollar translated into enormous windfall profits in their brokerage accounts. Let's hope their are no big Canes in the Gulf this Summer , or Fall.
Most of the exporters heavily subsidize their own consumption -- the Arab countries, Venezuela, and Russia. They do this to keep their people happy & productive, and also to keep pressure on supply, and thus prices high. Even PRC, definitely not an exporter, every quarter writes gov't checks totaling now about $10,000,000,000 to CNOOC, PetroChina, and SinoPec. PRC does it to fuel that 10% growth, but for the others it's pretty much rank mercantilism. But we can't complain, really, because we use a lot of oil, and prefer to buy it rather than produce it. Democrats should be happy -- they are getting what they want: an America less dominant.
