Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Very good especially coming from someone who has seemed wishywashy on the subject. NYT is for the 1st Amend. and would never censor anyone unless they disagree or are critical of the Times. Chertoff is no one of consequence anyhow.
To be the second comment about this excellent article:
"In the end, the debate is not about enforcement tactics. It’s about enforcing the rule of law. Do our critics want a country where employers create economic incentives for people to come here illegally? Do they desire an America with open borders and uncontrolled illegal migration? Should federal officials tacitly allow this to happen by rejecting every meaningful effort to enforce the law?" The answer to all of these questions posed by Chertoff is "I dunno but John McCain sure does!" Off topic, and please feel free to remove this after you read it. (I have no email address for you guys.)
I am finding that your site takes an inordinately long time to load, and I have a 3-month-old, well-maintained 'loaded' MacBook with a fast WiFi connection. Sites vary in their load time, but though yours is not especially graphics-heavy it takes longer to load than most slick, big Flash sites I visit. Moreover, the site sputters while loading. That is to say, I get an indication it's fully loaded in my RAM, and then a fresh indication that loading is still incomplete. While this goes on, my browser (mostly Safari) is inoperative. The evidence in toto suggests that what's happening is some script that is lagging behind. It may be Java or something else. For example, this complex site loads much faster than yours: http://www.superherohype.com/ Of course, I may be wrong about all this. Maybe it's me. I suggest you ask your readers if they are experiencing something along these lines. If so, you may want to address it, as it is certainly costing you readers. My experience is that your site, not the many others I visit, is the prime culprit. This may possibly be a problem that PJ media has visited upon you. I noticed similar loading problems, though maybe not quite as severe, when I used Instapundit as my home page. Insty was a snap to load until PJ started running heavily script-dependent ads on that site. (I may be on the wrong track though... I don't see any PJ ads on your site today.) FWIW, my own site has loading issues. But that's because I wrote my CSS code myself, and I am NOT a programmer. (I recently hired a real programmer to help me assemble a new site, and rid me of my spaghetti-and-meatballs code. I know my limits.) Just wanted to give you a heads-up. I could be all wet about this - as I say, I am no programmer. Loads fast for me. Would be interested in knowing whether anybody else has that problem.
Maybe it's just me. I've had this problem since I discovered the site. I'd assume it was me, if it wasn't for the fact that it loads slower than any other site I visit.
I'll try some other browsers and defrag my disc and report back. Sometimes a site just doesn't like Safari. Let's define fast first. But it generally takes 10-15 seconds for MF to load for me. Took about 4 seconds for MS's example to load. Okay, just tried a fresh reload of Maggies... 18 seconds. The header and sidebars come up quick... the main page takes all the time.
It comes up like lightning on my trusty power Mac. :)
Leave it to you, Luther, to actually time it. I'd try that if I had something with a second hand just so I could say, "Oh, MF loads in 5.6 seconds on my trusty Mac." Well you know Meta... in my 'bug catchin' business time is everything... if it don't work quick you might have to run fast. Seconds count.
My experience of loading time is similar to Luther's fresh reload, ranging from 4 to 10 seconds and the main page takes the time.
Well worth the wait. I'm seeing well over 10 seconds. The site hangs on me. One thing: RELOADING is a different issue. It looks like if the scripts (it CAN'T be graphics) are cached, the site loads quickly. But if I bring the browser from a dead stop, such as after a system restart, I get the hang. It just goes on and on, I mean it's really bad. For me, anyway.
Hey, but if this is just me, that's fine. One thing about website design I DO know is that the experience one gets is not consistent across platforms (Mac/PC) or browsers. I myself like to get feedback from different users, that's why I started this. It is also possible that ONLY people with no problems loading Maggie will respond to this kind of survey. The ones having real problems... well, they're just not here, are they? Hopefully it's just me and it's something I can fix. "The ones having real problems... well, they're just not here, are they?"
It's stuff like this that makes the Internet the best game in town. I get in bed and just as I start to drift off, I'll think of something funny like Mister Snitch's line and laugh out loud. Could be it's the number of images that slow down your loading, plus the length of our front page.
I have problems loading this site also. I can not load the entire site any longer but only load the individual posts. While trying to load the main site, my computer will just hang up and not load. Now I will admit, I need more RAM and I am running W2000, but still, this is the only site I have issues with right now.
"I have problems loading this site also."
AHA! You know, they called me MAD at the Academy... I just figured it was my seven year old Presario runnin' ME with Firefox and dial up connection that was makin' it take so long. And it does hang up for me occasionally, as does Theo's blog.
Of course, both sites are more than worth the hassle. Welcome to the MFers. Good luck trying to keep us on topic. We are ADD challenged and refuse to take our Adderall because it keeps us from our naps.
That's because Chertoff speaks for himself. And also because of what Meta said. And two duck eggs.
I'm running XP SP3 with IE7 and every time i try to load MF my pet hamster farts in the key of D minor.
Fences are appropriate but the main effort should be shutting off the incentive of jobs that encourages the illegals, provided by criminal employers that are bucking the law.
Slamming the sources of inticement should be foremost amongst the efforts for securing America's borders. |
