Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, May 7. 2008While waiting for the Ice AgeAs the human race awaits the next inevitable Ice Age which will leave vast areas of the Northern Hemisphere under mile-thick glaciers, humans find it amusing to argue about the weather. Quote from a piece at Global Warming Politics:
However, fear-mongers like well-known emitter Al Gore says cyclone a consequence of global warming. WTH? Does he believe that, or does he just have a policy that everything that happens in weather is man's fault? He parodies himself while frightening the ignorant. Meanwhile meteorologist John Coleman echoes our piece on how the warming frenzy is damaging worthy environmental efforts. From his Open Letter to Environmentalists:

leave it to the likes of Al Gore to try to profit off those tens of thousands of drowned Burmese villagers.
Does he believe this stuff, or does he know it's a scam? That's my question.
so basically you're wondering whether he's crazy or crooked? hmmm...good question.
Why not both? You don't have to be smart to make money.
Gore is a prime example of a malignant narcissist, as defined by Dr. Sanity on her blog. He is convinced he is right on global warming, even though he has no scientific qualifications, and the "evidence" in his film is demonstrably false, just as he was convinced the election was stolen from him, even though vote recounts subsequently proved it wasn't. That kind of personality is so invested in his own righteousness that he refuses to listen to or accept evidence to the contrary of something he believes.
These are scary people. Marianne MM,
You're so right about those malignant narcissist. They are shameless, and Al Gore is the huckster selling warm snake oil to an unsuspecting world. He's probably made millions off of it. Shameful. Why just yesterday an Anon sent me a breakdown on an article in Psychology Today that referenced some of the attributes those malignant narcissists display and I immediately thought of Al Gore and Global Warming. I even looked up the article so I could grasp the entire scope of that particular piece. I was right there to be read. MM,
You seem to have an interest in psychology. Whether that extends to psychiatry or not I do not know but allow me to introduce you to a controversial but famous psychiatrist who has had an impact on traditional psychiatry. You may already be familiar with his work, if so then this is obviously redundant. Thomas Szasz's writing career has been founded on reaching for the truth by smashing the false linguistic and conceptual idols of psychiatry. His "Myth of Mental Illness," published in 1961, still stands as one of the most clear and devastating indictments of modern psychiatry: a system it describes as being rife with hypocrisy and mendacity. There is no such "disease" as mental illness, or schizophrenia, or insanity, he argues (brilliantly).(part of another's review) http://tinyurl.com/5zt4tj Here is also a short Youtube ( 3 mins) of the Dr. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Qj7GmeSAxXo And, by the way, polar bears don't drown, unless they are badly injured. They aren't called "ursus maritimus" for nothing. Polar bear biologists have tracked tagged bears swimming 500 miles at a clip.
They're doing just fine, thank you. Eighteen out of the 20 polar bear populations being regularly tracked by biologists have increased their numbers. Lotta warmingist nonsense going around. Save your money. Marianne Spam Prevention: Invalid message.
Your comment could not be added because comments for this entry have either been disabled, you entered invalid data, or your comment was caught by anti-spam measurements. Dear Spam Prevention: My comment consisted of seven common English words and a link to a Telegraph article on global warming. Please take your spam list and stick it where the sun don't shine. Thanks for understanding. Dr. Mecury... I have had the same problem. It appears that you can't leave a link as the last item in a comment. I had the problem a couple of days ago and and appeared to solve it by adding some text after the link. Then again maybe it was sheer luck that it worked. It doesn't show up in preview, only when you submit. This is a test...
text Okay... left that link as the last item, it was caught by the spam filter. Now, I've added some text. Let's see if it goes through. "I think my theory valid invalid."
Fixed that for you. :) Were you sure those were the same link? Okay, hold on, another test: another test Nope, that doesn't seem to be it.
The last time I ran into it was a month ago. I was compiling some list, and, just for laughs, added "Britney Spears" to the mix. Got the spam message. Removed the "Britney Spears", went right on through. For those of you scoring at home, that's not "spam prevention", that's "censorship". Okay, let's try a little list of the words a true-blue Yankee would most like censored. We'll get to the bottom of this! Britney Spears Paris Hilton Lindsay Lohan Liberals Southerners Confederacy War of Northern Aggression Hominy Grits Okra Crocodiles Nancy Pelosi Barbara Boxer Diane Feinstein California Hippies Berkeley Global {warming | cooling | change} Polar bears Ice caps Carbon dioxide I gotta be honest with you guys -- that all looks like spam to me! Okay, here goes! Come on Doc... grits and okra as spam. Never!
Well it's funny doc... my experiment did work for me. At the time. But later I tried to discover if a link or a link with embedded text made any difference. And I couldn't get either to work! And of course I was using no words that should have caused the filter to step in. Come on Doc... grits and okra as spam. Never!

And of course I was using no words that should have caused the filter to step in. Now same words with a link. http://www.dr-mercury.com/ Okay, now with text. It all went through!
So it's not a vast right-wing conspiracy, after all! Back to you, Mr. McLeod. Any other ideas? You need to try harder Meta... you must have something to say that would get you sinsured... :)
Okay doc... I tried with just your link and it wouldn't let me through. I then tried with text beyond the link and it did.
I'm thinking that we are dealing with a capricious and moody spam filter... one that doesn't always operate using logic and reason. Too emotional and subject to occasional fits of crying for no apparent reason. I think I will use my usual tactic when confronted with such behaviour... go have a beer and play on the computer. So now there's a stampede of iceburgs floating farther south than normal. I suppose one could say "Well, global warming is causing an egregious amount of calving!!!"
Or, one might corrrectly say "Hmm, they're not melting as fast as they used to because of colder than usual air and water temperatures." Excuse me, I have to inventory my potential source of firewood for heat next year now. I sure as hell can't rely on Al et al to ensure enough cow farts, or buffalo chips, to stay warm up north. |
