A Connecticut April Show-and-Tell, re-posted

Spent yesterday trout fishing with Gwynnie down in CT. We took a few photos to give our out-of-Yankeeland readers a little taste of CT in April:

A 10' high glacial "errratic," but so common we call them glacial
"regulars," in the woods. Even ox teams could not remove these from the
fields (these woods were dairy farms 60 years ago):

I've been watching the usual spot for Trout Lily but have seen none this year in Ohio. April 14, 2006 pic

Just a Sony point-and-shoot DSC-P93. I no longer use it, preferring image stabilization in the smaller DSC-T9 picked up half price recently. Though the latter seems to have trouble deciding to focus close if any alternative is in view.

You can see in the background the outline of a bicycle, by the way. This is not a coincidence, if you're watching for wildflowers to come up.

Or, to translate BD's narrative:

"Hi, everybody! Gwyinnie and I went fishing! Look at these great photographs of beautiful flowers and great big rocks and gorgeous scenery and really kewl New England-type buildings!"

Opie: where is the fish?

"Uh, well... Say, did I tell you guys about these great photographs I took of these really beautiful flowers and..."

In other words, you didn't catch a damn thing. :)

I gotta confess, I got snookered along with everyone else. First, I read that it's a fishing trip, then I got distracted by the cool photos and completely forgot that it's the rule that, on a fishing trip, you post a pic of the string of fish you caught.

Unless, of course, you didn't catch any.

So, c'mon, BD, 'fess up. Did Investigative Reporter Opie expose your "game of deception" or not?

As far as cameras go, well, without being too delicate about it, yes, you need a new camera. The pics were nice, in the sense that they fulfilled their role in this massive deception you tried to pull on an unsuspecting public, but they weren't very good by modern photographic standards. Ron's pic proved the point, and it was just taken with some average Sony.

I wouldn't, however, make it any big deal. Just cruise by Best Buy, handle them all, and buy the one you like the most. I have a nice little Kodak that looks and feels like a 'regular' camera, has a viewfinder so I don't have to burn up battery power using the LCD screen, has auto-everything and a docking station that both recharges the battery and makes it easy to transfer the pics to the computer. I jam it onto the docking station and the window with the pics pops open on the Desktop, ready for editing.

And, again, my highest compliments for a job well done. I pride myself on being able to spot deceptions like this, and have a number of myth-busting expos�s on my site, but even ol' "Doc Eagle-Eyes" failed to catch this one, it was so brilliantly executed. Good work, Investigative Reporter Opie!

Poor Dr Merc must think fishing is about catching fish!

That's only about 25% of it Doc. The majority of our catch were released, which doesn't make for much of a photo op unless you're fishing together - and what's the point of that? I'm having a 16-inch brook trout for dinner tonight, mostly because I wrecked its jaw getting the fly out (a #10 beadhead wolly bugger, if you're interested).

I'll send Bird Dog a fish photo, if he wants to post it.

I took the trout lily with my Canon EOS Rebel XTi, using the 100mm macro lens, f4 at 1/200, and the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam using a f2.8 70-200 Image-Stabilized Lens set at f9 1/500.

We don' wanna hafta get a new camera - we're still paying for this one!

Mmmm! I'll be thinking of you tonight as I eat my frozen TV dinner. :/

The pic of the trout lily looked sharp as a tack. It was the 'scenic' pictures that followed that left a little something to be desired. Or maybe the camera was okay but they were shot at too low a resolution?

That was a while ago, yes. The 1950's, actually.

Those forests are all second third, fourth and fifth growth!

Gotta remember: that by 1805, only 5% of CT was covered by remaining native forests. The rest of the trees were all removed to create farmland, for wood for building or heating, or for charcoal for steel-making.

You don't think the original landowners created those stonewalls in the middle of forests, do ya?

Leave a CT farm field fallow or meadow uncut for a couple of years and ...boing!....you've got a good start on a woodlot.

Did you try fishing in the Ct. River too, or are those photos just to show where you were? It looks like at least one was taken from Haddam Meadows. It's shad season about now so with the right bait you might have caught yourself a good dinner.
