Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Nice stems!

I laughed when I saw the "star explodes" story on Fox. My first thought was, "Uh, don't you mean 'exploded'?"

On the other hand, this is the same site that put their last Bigfoot article in the 'Science' section, so what do I know?

Re: sumptuary laws, NJ, the first thing I thought of was your "One trans-fat at a time" article. I liked this line from the Wikipedia article:

"In most times and places they were notoriously ineffectual."

Amen, brudder.

For something really comedic, I invite everyone to click on the link and check out the picture on the right. The French dandy from the 17th century is wearing:

- High-top boots with big ruffles on them
- Pants with big fluffy ruffles in them
- A big fluffy coat with gigantic epaulets
- A big fluffy wig

And this is AFTER he's shed his "ribbons and slashed sleeves in favor of sober dress in accordance with the Edict of 1633."

Those French have always had that "special way" about them, haven't they?

Can people regenerate body parts?

When I was a younger man and still to this day often see significant growth in certain body parts.

For one, if you cut a human liver in half ( I didn't read the article so if this is there excuse me) it will regenerate it's size but not it's function.

Does the Christian Science Monitor have it right....A Depression?

Recession is a given. Can we avoid depression?
Economists wonder if the Bush administration is ideologically inclined to do what's needed to rescue economy.

When economist Robert Parks predicted early last week that there was more than a 60 percent probability the current financial meltdown in the United States would lead to the "Bush depression," his phone began ringing like crazy with calls from the media.

Only last fall, most economists were forecasting a modest slowdown. Now, a good majority of them see a slump big enough to qualify as a recession.

But a depression?
