Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, March 19. 2008Gun RightsFinally, it looks like the Supremes are going to reaffirm the Second Amendment despite Justice Breyer's incomprehensible musings, roughly "I'm not sure why Washington DC shouldn't have the right to ban handguns, with their terrible crime rate." Hey, Mr. Justice: Why doesn't Waterbury CT have the "right" to ban McDonalds, with their terrible obesity rate? I thought people had rights to protect them from government powers. Or did I get it wrong? If this deal goes down the right way, there will be much to thank Pres. Bush for. Decision expected in June. Trackbacks

Here's hoping the current SCOTUS renders a decision that would make the founding fathers smile. If that causes Sarah Brady to poop her pants, so be it.

"I'm not sure why Washington DC shouldn't have the right to ban handguns, with their terrible crime rate."
I'm not sure why any half-assed liberal off the street shouldn't be a supreme court justice, with Breyer's level of informed opinion. "I'm not sure why Washington DC shouldn't have the right to ban handguns, with their terrible crime rate."
I'm not sure why New York state shouldn't ban sluts, whores, tarts, strumpets, and married women. well, we oughtta retain a few of the strumpets, what would a brass ensemble be with just tubas and french horns?

I'm not sure why MA shouldn't have the right to ban noisy, smokey, power boats.
At that point, a reporter interjected: “the Mayor (DC Mayor Adrian M. Fenty) says the handgun ban and his initiatives have significantly lowered violent crime in the District. How do you answer that, Mr. Heller?”
The initial answer certainly wasn’t expected – Dick Heller laughed. Ruefully. Pointing at the Mayor who was making his way across the plaza, surrounded by at least six DC police officers, Heller said, “the Mayor doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” “He doesn’t walk on the street like an average citizen. Look at him; he travels with an army of police officers as bodyguards – to keep him safe. But he says that I don’t have the right to be a force of one to protect myself. Does he look like he thinks the streets are safe?” There was no follow-up question. Another comment that I liked:
After 90 minutes spent watching lawyers and justices parsing facts, laws and the Constitution, when Mr. Heller was asked by a reporter after the hearing why he took his case all the way to SCOTUS he had an answer, which I'll closely paraphrase: I'm a federal guard. I carry a gun at work to protect the politicians. When I go home, though, they've decided that my life is not worth as much. They've decided I can't use a gun to defend myself at home. Was uncertain of the spelling there for a moment(age, you know) so looked it up--
Hallelujah, Halleluyah, or Alleluia, is a transliteration of the Hebrew word ??????????? (Standard Hall?luya, Tiberian Hall?lûy?h) meaning "[Let us] praise (????????) Yah (????)." It is found mainly in the book of Psalms and has a similar pronunciation in many, but not all, languages. The word is used in Judaism as part of the Hallel prayers, and in Christian praise. It has been accepted into the English language, but its Latin form Alleluia is used by many English-speaking Christians in preference to Hallelujah. I don't think I've read in any of the amicus briefs an arguement asserting right to keep and bear arms is to protect one against the government, though many argue right is for self preservation and protection of persons and personal property.
Me thinks, whatever the ruling, right to to keep and bear arms will continue to be daily infringed for years to come by municipalities, states and feds. Bird Dog:
It says in the site's banner that you are 'politically centrist." Surely, then, a "centrist" blog would be willing, even eager, to link to both sides of an issue, correct? Good, because I have one for you. Here, I'll even help with the header: "Known nutcase and general wacko Doc Murky attempts to scribble down some sort of coherent opposing view", with "opposing view" being the link. Looks good to me! "I thought people had rights to protect them from government powers. Or did I get it wrong?" You got it wrong, my friend. The Roots of Fear http://www.dr-mercury.com/tb/tbgunfear.htm "If you have time, when you hear somebody crawling in your -- your bedroom window, you can run to your gun, unlock it, load it and then fire?" Scalia asked.
I suggest the Judges try it out and when they know how much time it takes them, ponder if DC's restriction is unreasonable. How fast can one who keeps arms for the purpose is really quick. One minute at the outside and less if weapon is at hand and me don't have to run. But I'd make sure it ain't one of me Xes before firing. If it is I'd toss a pillow. I really don't give a damn what SCOTUS rules when they publish their opinion. I've read too much of our history, studied Constitutional Law for a year at the graduate level and know what the FF's meant.
You would have never found me in line to give up my guns ..I'd just go revolutionary as did Geo. Washington et. al. It does look good though cause liv'n full time in the woods, eat'n outta dumpsters and finally being caught and killed in a shootout isn't a great retirement scenario. Me don'ts thik y'all find dumpster's for sustenance rootin' about da woods but if ya do and get done in it, the cleanup will be minimalized, no doubt.
Good luck and if der is a dumpster in da wood, da bears'll be armed, too. |
