We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Weds morning/Tues evening links

Heading south to NYC right now, and I will be busy tomorrow, so I will leave these:

The demise of dead tree encyclopedias. Sad. When I was in high school, I could not understand much of anything without my Columbia Encyclopedia on my desk and my giant multi-volume Britannica on the shelf - a major gift from my parents. Still have it. If you don't look up stuff you don't know, you will never know the first thing about anything. Not that I do not appreciate Wiki for quick reminders, links, and superficial introductions: Wiki is not all that bad as a starting point for exploring things. For example, I gave myself a fine mini-survey of the history of China the other day. It was good. I like to get the big picture before the details or I end up disoriented.

Iraq slips off the radar. WaPo, and McCain strolls through Baghdad.

Climate change hoopla, 1890-present. Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything to make money from it but Al Gore.

Would the Dalai Lama resist any oppression? Doubtful.

..... Exactly right on Tibet and the Dalai Lama. Too bad for that country. I read "Seven Years in Tibet" and the Dalai Lama was a young boy at the time of the writing. The foreshadowings of the country's sad future were apparent even then.

RE: Michelle Obama. I wish she'd give a whole lot of speeches so we could see her twisted message of HOPE more often. Obama is truly saddled with losers.....

And agree with NJ - I'm so sick of race issues! Oh that Jesse and Al haven't spawn to carry on into the next generation as they do.

You folks maybe sick of race but it is one of the seminal human characteristics. From those characteristics entire cultures develop. Some good, some horrible.
The aversion we have develop in discussing race and cultures, and which are better than others has developed into a very nasty phobia.
A multiplicity of races and cultures exist. They are not all equal in the scope of contribution to mankind but we've brained ourselves into some kind of firm belief that all men (and cultures) are equal...some just different. It's great metaphysical whimsy but doesn't come close to reality.

Different races .... get over it.

As Moonbattery pointed out yesterday Obamas appeal has taken a bump UP since his soul brother/mentor/racists partor Wright has been defended by Barak.

It is edifying in that the N-people feel so passionately hateful toward the white race. Couple that with the book store at the church filled with Malcolm X and Nation of Islam screeds and you have the makings of a real recruitment rich environment for AQ and other terrorist groups. Wright is just a Black Panther/NOI/racist in spades.

Two things are happening:
Blacks are coming out for a black power candidate, as Wright defines Hussein.
and
White MSM types are able now to make even more of a Dr. King out of Hussein, since, well, HE is the only one allowed to talk about it.

Therefore: the more it gets talked about the blacker he becomes, more untouchable in some ways, and more mystical.

I don't think this applies to Habu. He isn't heard by enough people.

And Meta- you really have an inner racist that hates Michelle? You are saying that you hate her for her skin color and not her stupid views? Yikes. I hate Michelle because she hates this country- despite what she has made for herself.
