Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Thursday, March 6. 2008Friday Morning/Thurs evening LinksI have Friday off and will be skiing again for two days at Mt. Snow (current conditions here - when they call it "granular," they mean like gravel, but if it warms up a little it's a nice ride), so I will leave our readers with this "stack of stuff": Kipling in Vermont. Neoneoneo Map of the languages of Europe, via Siberian Light Instrument of Surrender. Englishman's Castle Al Gore's inconvenient wealth. And that's not including this extra $35 million on the way. Let us Talk of Many Things. It's a good intro to Bill Buckley's thinking. 7 Senate seats to watch Man-made floods in the Grand Canyon. We have mentioned many times here that flooding is good and natural. Foolish to live where floods happen, though: if you are asking for it, do not come crying to me. Therapists' offices. NYT Your gift cards could become worthless. Cribbage Nazis in Maine. Speaking of the Nanny State, watch what you read. It might "offend" some Sensitivity Nazi. I have a mental illness, says Eric:
Threat to home-schooling in Calif. I guess the union feels threatened. Note to the RAF: Hide! Truly unbelievable. How dare she? I am with Coyote on Mrs. Obama. A multi-millionaire Princeton and Harvard grad makes a national complaint about how difficult life is, about her college loans, and about getting good babysitters - while telling me to get a low-paying job in a "caring" profession. What a baby. Nobody owes her anything, least of all a (proud) UMass grad like me (where I stupidly majored in Domestic Beer Studies with a minor in Coed Studies - but it wasn't my fault). From Insty:
Why Cass Sunstein likes Obama. A puff piece? I do not take political advice from Mr. Sunstein. Still, Obama seems like an amiable, bright guy. Wrong politics, though. The Dems' FL and MI mess: The Hill What happens next? Rove on politics From No Pasaran:

I'm with Eric. There is nothing--nothing--on the political landscape, past, present, or future, that compares with the cheap, arrogant, cavalier, shameless way the Clintons have shat on this country -- and have gleefully caused it to shame itself with its idiotic romantic infatuation with them.
Agreed, Buddy, and especially like your last sentence. That shames ME. How can we live in a country so filled with morons?
(Yes, I know that sounds naive, but when the moron factor is so loud and extra stupid, there's no hiding it under the radar.) Apparently Maggies Farm is going to allow Dr. Mercury to call me a LIAR, and then have the stones to ask me to cool it.
Dr. Mercury initiated this, not me. He said he has the evidence but he won't show it. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE FIND THE QUOTE HE ATTRIBUTED TO ME. THE ONE HE SAYS I MADE ON THIS SITE? So does Maggies Farm desire comity or do they want to allow contributors to make unsubstantiated accusations that Maggies Farm tolerates "gang attacks" on the ideas and statements of new contributors? The burden of proof of Dr. Mercury's statement about me remains squarely on him, yet he refuses to cite the thread, date or any other information to us. MF if you don't want comity, well that can become thematic. It's stated clearly in the thread for Wed. morning that Dr. M. called Habu a liar....among other mockeries.
Dr. M. followed his usual MO by insulting someone, the blog, or a comment and then blithely morphing off to comment on the post as if he'd done nothing untoward. Habu has been asking for clarity since, and I don't blame him. meta, habu, good on the principle, however, the analog here would be the 18th century duel, where the protocol was that once the challenge had been refused, the conflict was considered ended. Little known fact, this is how most duel challenges played out.
In such a duel, Buddy, where one refused the challenge, who was considered the winner? Or was there a winner?
I'm hung-up less on principle sometimes and lasered-on to justice. I'm glad I didn't live during the times of duels because I am bad with an injustice. What did girls do back then? A 'Cynthia McKinney' with their parasols?

I dunno what the ladies did back in Europe, but they sure nuff had duels in the American West. There's a few famous ones. Derringers, in one of 'em.
But on the protocol, i guess the anecdotal evidence is that if the challengee refused to duel, and also refused to recant the slander, he pretty much had to leave town, or otherwise steer way clear of the aggrieved party. At any rate, the two parties circles of acquaintances would understand the denouement, and draw their own conclusions.

Ah BD,
Nice try fella but earlier today you didn't seem to have a problem with saying this: You have noticed that since my initial challenge of last evening the rube Dr. M has been mute. A man of his genius should be able to pull up the info he apparently had in hand just yesterday...but today.....nothing to back his claim. So what gives big mouth? #8.2.1.2 Habu on 2008-03-06 14:55 (Reply) H: Take your lithium . #8.2.1.2.1 BD on 2008-03-06 15:10 (Reply So BD, you're telling me that at 15:10 you're aware enough of SOMETHING to advise me to take my lithium, whereas by 19:50, you have no clue what it's all about......... Am I in a time warp here where the attacked , aggrieved party gets pilloried on specious evidence not even presented and the perp gets defended ? I'll tell ya straight up ... if that's the way you want it here at MF I can give a daily ration to every newcomer, be condescending and smarmy, and this place will stink like hell in no time ...of course you'll cut me off before that....but this is not Maggie's Farm it's the F*ck'n Twilight Zone..... Tell ya what BD..why don't you go find the quote that Dr. Mercury claims I made ON THIS SITE and then called me a liar about...certainly you can find it For what's it worth Habu I'm with you on this one. A scurrilous charge should be supported by proof.
And besides, I believe you were essentially correct in your original assertion re 'ganging up'... the only incidence I can think of offhand occurred to you. When a few of us thought you had taken a point a bit too far. Otherwise a pretty well mannered crowd and certainly not prone to 'ganging up'. Either Dr. M. should provide satisfactory proof of his allegation or be embarrassed to show his face around here. "where I majored in Domestic Beer Studies."
How wimpy...couldn't hack the foreign language labels could you? The NYT article on shrinks and their offices is yet another new layer of absurdity in that profession that I was not aware of. It would seem to me that seeing a shrink in their home would be a huge invitation for trouble. And if some of the descriptions of the home offices and situations are accurate, these people are even more nuts than I thought they were. Why is there not more open discussion of how whacko many of these people are?
Re- 7 Senate seats. Sen Sununu in NH is one of about 4 Senators who can understand a moderately complex scientific discussion. As our state becomes bluer, opponents like that cipher Jean Shaheen (a pleasant woman who accomplished less than nothing as governor) actually have a good chance of ousting Sununu -lifetime ACU rating of 93.
AVI, You are being very nice in saying Jean Shaheen is a pleasant woman. In reality she is a bitch along with being a witch, just like her idol Hillary. We are blue state and getting bluer, and your dead on; the bitch can beat Sununu. God and Baby Jesus help us!!!
side note--NJ, the "threat to home-schooling in Calif" link goes to the LATimes sign-up page --
In addition to my answer above at 21:27 I also provided a brief overview of what was going down in the Thursday Morning thread ....three posts below your lithium comment.
Now Dr Mercury mentioned that this took place in his post on Bush Derangement Syndrome, so that should help you in finding out if I have a legit beef or if a double dose of lithium is needed. If you want to follow the line you can go back to yesterdays original comments and get schooled on what's what. BD comment #8 should have my imprimatur on it , not yours. sorry.
Tell ya what .... let's make this easy. BD won't have to try and keep up with his own blog, Dr. Mercury can run a muck calling people liars and making false claims, and I can gain several more hours of productive time.
Now that sounds like what would be characterized here at Maggies Farm as of late as a win-win.. Adios MF'ers habu, no, sorry, but you will not be granted leave until after the election this November. Then, if you need some time off, we'll re-visit the particulars.
Habu, your anger and your hurt are justified. Don't make a bad situation worse by not blogging/posting. I look forward to what you and everyone else on Maggie's Farm have to say everyday. On my bad days it makes them more tolerable reading all of you, knowing that I can't read you anymore is really pissing me off. I judge people by their actions by Dr. M not responding says alot. no need to run off in the wilderness and lick your wounds. Let go, life is too short and come back.........soon!!!!! That's an order, tough guy.
Take it back Habu... some folks have never had to make a real stand... its a new experience for them. Keep pounding... you're right.
Habu,
We are your friends. Please don't call us MF'ers. (Hoo-haa.) Anyway, I refuse your resignation. Work it out. We're with you because you're a MF'er, too. And the Doc? Well, he's a different kind of MF'er. But that's what Maggie's seems to be about. It's sort of has a hodgepodge, pygmalion vibe. Hang tough, my rather large, virtual friend. Just don't let the bastards wear you down. (Or really, really insult you and make you angrier than nest of White Faced Hornets getting poked with a stick and then run away like liberal from common sense). Whut es gown on heah? Habu caint be leavn becos MF dont werk thwout him. Comments be all desultori if'n he leeve.
'Sides. He press 300 pownds. I weiay 300 pownds an I wish'n he will press me wun day. Habu! You come bak else I wont hav no fun. I be sad. Reel sad. Not long ago, Sha'Nay'Nay' and her sister went to get their pictures taken. The photographer was fiddling with his camera and Sha asked sis what he was doing. Sis said "He trying to focus." Sha squealed "BOTH of us?"
All the misery and demand for the truth after grave insult by this blog's finest and most valuable commenter and what does the blog host say?
TAKE YOUR LITHIUM. What a total lack of class. but that's a running joke between BD & habu -- 'take your lithium' means 'easy, hoss!'
Oh. Thanks, Buddy. I guess our host is not suited for judging the vagaries of human nature.
Total lack of class and understanding. well, while we're all in this mood, this might be a good time to post that 10,000 word essay about my ex wife. It starts off "It was a dark and stormy night, and I was a dork and smarmy blight...."

Ok, I had to take a peek ...
I appreciate all the nice things said. It is a virtual community and perhaps that is not my best venue. In the real world Dr. Mercury would perhaps be more gracious as we talked over our diffferences man to man. Anyway, let me clarify one thing, that needs clarification. In my complaint I have placed great emphasis on one phrase "ON THIS SITE" I do recall making those comments on another much more aggressive site where it could only be explained to you folks by having the opportunity to read the full exchange. That can't happen because if my memory is correct it happened on POLITICO in a kerfuffle with some socialist anti American types. When I went after them POLITICO wiped out the exchange and I was barred. I don't know how many of you have ever taken on the lefties part of POLITICO but it's a rough patch of territory, so I gave as good as I got. Not to boast but my profile in one month got looked at over 14,000 times. I had few allies. Politico didn't want my voice so I came here determined to try and be entertaining, informative, and less confrontational. If my memory is correct Dr. Mercury was, and knew he was, referring to Politico, not MF. I could be wrong but if I am then I don't understand why he doesn't produce the evidence he attempted to link to this site. So, did I say it, yes. Did I say it on this site...I do not believe so. Dr. Mercury then further twisted my tail by calling me a liar, only to then be bopped away never to return. Well, your gracious words and feelings are heartwarming and I will get a nights rest and see what tomorrow brings. There are many good writers on this blog and I do end up spending many hours a day here as opposed to being productive at another endeavor. Good decisions are rarely made in the heat of the moment, so as the Bard said; Act II, Scene II of Macbeth "Methought I heard a voice cry 'Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep', the innocent sleep, Sleep that knits up the ravell'd sleeve of care , The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath, Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course, Chief nourisher in life's feast,--" Despite our previous disagreements Habu... you're a damn good man. Fortunate this country that you served it.
My honor to salute you... Semper Fi. Let them banjos play, pumpin' new 5h1t by HWA...(apologies to Easy-E)
that's right -- make fun of Albion's seed -- they don't mind-- besides they are mostly busy in the front lines somewhere, keeping the barbarians out of your parlor for ya.
Really, buddy? Are you saying the military consists disproportionally of white folk or that the front lines are where most of the white folk are? My observations conflict with both implications...
pardon my French, KWF, but i don't give a flying fuck about you or your "observations".
My, my, this is quite a friendly space. And logical, too...
If I may quote what hath been quoted to me... "Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for."

ha -- first you throw a gratuitous sneer about 'banjos' (meaning, 'hillbillies'), then, when i opine that America's hillbillies are in fact quite undervalued, you repond with the old standby all-purpose accusation, that i'm a racist.
Then, when i provide a much-deserved response in-kind, you commence whining that there's something wrong with the blog, that it isn't 'friendly enough'. Haw -- the truth is, KFM, you -- and people like you (smarmy pseudo-clevers) -- just utterly suck, and that's really about all there is to it.

Not sure where I accused you of being a racist, idiot maybe, but not racist. I was just responding to your assertion that the "seed of Albion" was solely responsible for keeping the evil hordes at bay. Perhaps you are over sensitive about such matters due to some deep, disturbing self-loathing brought on by some childhood trauma, perhaps sexual? Either way, I thought you didn't "give a flying fuck" (as you so delicately put it) about either me or my "observations". My advice to you would be to just take my responses like a man, or at least however you may have taken it like a little boy, and move on with your life.

KRW..
When was this cited to you? "If I may quote what hath been quoted to me... "Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for." #14.1.1.1.1 KRW on 2008-03-07 09:01 also please explain this Non sequitur: "I'd post more often on this blog, but the level of interesting discussion here deteriorates pretty quickly. The hick/cayjun/whatever lingo is cute the first couple of posts you read, but over time it's just irritating to read and loses its intended impact. Or at least with me it does . Perhaps you could consider moderating, but perhaps you like it. WTH, it's your blog. #26 KRW on 2008-03-05 17:59 (Reply) followed later by this: Sheesh, what an overreaction to a perceived overreaction. "kool aide", "miss prissy", and the inevitable "Third Reich"...looks like a lib blog. OK, Roger Wilco. Just wont read 'em, but that's what I wasn't (was?) doing in the first place . Hence my point. But don't ask why some people don't post more often here. #30.1.1 KRW on 2008-03-06 07:44 (Reply) You are either misstating the facts of your reading habits or are intentionally misrepresenting the facts. In the 3-5-08 at 17:59 your claim is that which is highlighted, stating that you DO READ THEM, (the Hick stuff) In your 3-6-08 at 07:44 your claim is that you weren't reading them. That is a neat trick ..to do and not to do.....KRW you're a mess in attempting to sully this site. At least attempt to stay somewhere near the facts of what you do or don't do ...or are the facts unimportant?

''Really, buddy? Are you saying the military consists disproportionally of white folk or that the front lines are where most of the white folk are?''
''Not sure where I accused you of being a racist, idiot maybe, but not racist.'' And you said ''solely responsible'' -- not me. You are a liar, a fake, and a bearer-of-false-witness. A thoroughly nasty and unpleasant person -- and i'm pretty certain you know it. you could, you know, try to communicate without all the insults and half-assed self-superior horse shit -- that ever occur to you, einstein?
My first recollection of KRW was his lament that the comments in the threads weren't quite to his satisfaction. That's perfectly cool, but it's also quite narcistic, judgmental, and simply rude.
No one here is saying you must say things one way or another, but when you do say something prepare to take responsibility, hence the fracas between H & D and the lack of warmth you receive here. Thank you KRW, for the transparency in your introduction. Buddy, you’re a good man. If I might offer one bit of advice: Don’t feed the trolls. They wither after time and go away. you're right, J. -- i try not to get p'o'd in this 'spose to be elucidating AND enjoyable blog-commenting hobby.
but, ok, here's habu having a hard time with a point-of-order, and here's this other old hillbilly combat vet luther, and they're both now over-aged for the shooting wars but still trying to serve the country through efforts inside this communication channel, and L sez something heartfelt--and thereby sticks his neck out for any slick jackass with a keyboard and a nasty intent--and sure enough, right on cue, here comes that 'banjo' comment -- an obvious, cruel, and sly attempt to embarrass both H And L and turn a real life conversation into a mockery or laughing stock. so i just got a little pissed off -- i'm over it now -- and thanks for the reminder re trolls --ya can't win -- engaging them after all is precisely what they're after -- Jephnol,
This particular troll is "CHAR". She trolls the blog daily but seldom comments until she can find a way to do a takedown. That is her very, very sick MO. She carries a 'My Little Pony' lunch box filled with Twinkies and feeds on them all day long. What about the facts? I don't have them in link form or anything, but each time this comes up- the lefty slam on the military being some kind of new plantation- I hear from fact mongers that our military is:
Above average intelligence Above average income/family wealth Above average white and Southern (meaning disproportionately so) and the kicker: Combat troops even more so (white and Southern) In addition: people of color disproportionately occupy non-combat positions. So much for the Army being the new slave trade. If this is incorrect I would like to be set straight so I don't continue thinking the White Southern Male is our last hope for Freedom's Salvation. (at least the big-stick portion thereof) Phil,
I do agree in general. I do not know what the proportion of race/ethnicity/income of combat troops are, but the military in general is pretty evenly balanced. My casual observation is that I see more than a small number of combat soldiers named Rodriquez, Martinez, and Gonzales. Not to mention the numerous "skis" who are not exactly "seed of Albion". I realize that I've stepped into a fire ant mound. The slightest disturbance of the order here results in ranting way out of proportion to the perceived slight. Scratch the typical responder here and they scream how hurt they are. As I said on Wednesday's posts, the resemblance to liberal blogs is somewhere between amusing and scary. Enjoy the sandbox, but I've got better things to do. You've got better things to do? Fantastic! Get thee gone, harridan!
KWX is a busy person--gotta go find some Latino and some Polish Marines, and wait for 'em to Semper Fi each other, then make some hip-hop light-bulb and taco jokes, then act all innocent & superior when someone objects.
