Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, February 17. 2008Monday LinksI am posting this in advance because I am leaving tonight for a ski trip to good old Killington. Mass Pike to 91 north. We are in the mood for some gnarly, bone-jarring bump runs, and the natural snow in VT has been great this year, due to the global cooling crisis. Cold is good: I will be expecting some snow-chilled pepper vodka and some nickel poker when I arrive, and I hope to freeze my buns off. Yahoo. A great escape from reality. Give me your best shot, Mountain, and try to break me. I am ready for you. Speaking of cooling, the Arctic ice is back. Obama is a Leftist. Duh. More at American Power. Never, never tell me that there is anything Christian about giving other peoples' money away. Nevertheless, Mrs. Obama tries to tell me that my soul is broken. Do not take my inventory, Mrs. O... My soul is my problem, not yours. Ardolino takes a look at the Iraq legislature. Sounds like normal politics to me, which I guess is a good thing. Still waiting for my Brit cousins to pull up their trousers and tell their nanny state to go f- itself. Violent video games. And bottled water. Pagan religions thrive in the USA. Avenue K and the travel lobby. Dem Project. I am glad that I am a minority. As a white Christian heterosexual male, they will never fire me from my newsroom... will they? "I cannot process this kind of thinking." Neither can I. McCain: No new taxes. Good. I do not pay much, but I hate government greed. We are stupid. Jules. I am precisely as stupid as I chose to be. The Newt: Repubs need to be Conservative. The black voting bloc, and how the Clintons might have blown it. I detest the very notion of voting blocs, but I guess they are the reality. The Islamic revival in Egypt. Sad. A little bit of Jesus would do them good. Bush is popular in Africa. Rightly so. But what Africa needs, if they want economic growth, is free markets. More re Dr. Rossiter's book on Liberalism (sounds like our Dr. Bliss):
Government fails at providing power in SA. Of course. A government couldn't run a candy shop without a subsidy. Soros tentacles. The guy is a creeped-out crackpot. Marxism is anti-statist, says S&M. OK, but when and where has that happened in the past 100 years? Please. Socialism is all about centralized power. Did you read our link to You are what you spend? Worth reading, with two good charts. He makes the case that what matters is what people consume, not what they make. Of course, America has the richest "poor" people in the world because income does not include government and charity help. Re Hillary (is she running in Texas, by any chance?)
Tin cans? Not just totty. Theo has tons of good stuff up.

Michelle Obama knows that the nation's souls are broken because the Right People haven't been allowed to interfere with them the last few years. It is their need to meddle which drives the perception that you have a problem.
C.S.Lewis's comment about an individual applies very well to progressives as a group: "She was the sort of person who lived for others. You could tell the Others by their hunted look." What a great quotation! It's not funny, but it makes me laugh.
So, Obama and his Co-Mama are going to save all our souls before they get on with the business of saving the soul of Kim Jong Il and making off with his largest-in-the-world collection of porn? GACK! Since when does the President of the United States deal with the ethereal nature of us? Oh, I know......... when he blows up a country with bad people in it. That makes our souls sing. well, old Bubba Clinton was right a few weeks back when he called BHO a ''roll of the dice''. note however that his point is that the Clinton dice have already rolled, meaning before that they too were a roll of the dice. and wit me dey done crapped out.
I just put the Dr. Rossiter link over on the Belmont "daily roundup Feb 17" post. I added:
Top clinical psychiatrist says Liberals are mentally ill. (well, that almost goes without saying -- jeez, just look at their results.) But anyway, the doc says Liberalism is the political attitude that results from adolescent-stage arrested development. OK, so what arrested all the development? The comments above are right on and name many of our development-arresting situations. But what developed these situations? We did. Even those of us non or even anti-Liberal, as obviously, duh, we've stood by and watched it happen. When did SAT scores peak and turn down? I'm thinking that was one signal call to action -- but we didn't act -- as the numbers showed year after year. Well, whatever else our current fix may be, it is surely what happens when individuals who need to act, don't. Those individuals will wind up sharing a culture in deep sh*t, which is precisely what we are sharing now. The only thing saving our bacon is the folks in the military, which as an organization is culturally a meritocratic throwback to an earlier America which contained adults. Now we have three candidates, one of whom will soon be our next president, and two of whom have no clue whatsoever as to what is right and/or wrong with the culture, the economy, the military, foreign policy, domestic policy, the past, the future, or any damn thing at all other than how to operate their ascensions to political offices from which we will stand by and watch them wreak ever more and greater havoc on the fundamental principles which made the nation strong enough in the first place to allow vast numbers of its people to merely opt out of ever having to think. But never fear, this will self-correct. But it will have to bottom out first. Wonder what the bottom will look like? Buddy,
One reason SATs went down is affirmative action and the resultant ease with which 'lower' kids have entrance to college. So many kids take the SATs now who would never have bothered back in the day, that the scores naturally went down. It's not that kids got dumber; it's that dumber kids take the SATs. that makes sense, meta. bad example on my part -- but still.
this link from a commenter @ belmont -- this is ugly -- high schools being radicalized wholesale, openly, and without opposition:
http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/0216maceachern0217.html To be a high school educator, and to exploit that position to indoctrinate defenseless adolescents, to exploit the authority granted by schoolboards and the job protection guaranteed by teachers' unions, in order to systematically, programatically, glorify the world's worst sort of political deviants & criminals, to rationalize murderous tyranny and the deliberate wastage and enslavement of the spirits, lives, property, and liberty of generations of people, is as crippling to a child's welfare, mental & emotional health, and prospects of personal success in normal society, as any other form of child abuse, and as such is outrageous, criminal, and inexcusable.
Where are Tucson's parents? Or any adults at all? Where is the local media firestorm that would result from, say, glorifying and calling for a Nazi revolution? yuk. That situation is going to get ugly fast. You don't scare a bunch of teachers and an entire guidance department and expect things to run smoothly. I figure a good school shooting will come first and then a teacher walk-out. Not every teacher in a building is liberal, and soon enough, those who pretended to be progressive because that's what they had to do, will come around. Bad news.....

summer song winter field blood drops muscles relax Buddy, all good posts.I often wonder what the bottom looks like.Habu is right in alot of ways;we need to clean house, and do it quickly to right the ship.
yep, habu is definitely right on the problem -- that problem being that our culture is rapidly morphing into something sinister and primitive. i think we one chance to find our way back, and that's to somehow lead our waywards back to believing in the power of faith again. Most of the waywards will never be able to directly believe in God -- but there is a proof building that believing in the power of faith is practically good enough. And that doesn't even require a supernatural -- it just requires enough observation to note that idolatry is everywhere and everywhere making folks miserable.
We need to break the teachers union as a political force. Abolish state runned schools. Why do property owners have to fund schools but everyone in the community gets to vote on budgets. If kids don't want to learn throw them out so those who do want to learn don't have any distractions. We'll still need them for low skill work when we close the borders.( I can dream ) Dems want pre-school, post-school, no home school. Keep them within the learning sphere of these left wing American hating teachers and away from their family. Make the government their family.
Sean,
You can't abolish public schools. For one thing, the public would go wild with millions of kids running free all day, every day. School is at least a babysitter. You also can't just throw a kid out unless he's done something so egregious the court agrees that throwing him out is the only option. In most cases, the state has to provide alternative education for him. Otherwise, it's creating a future criminal who will cost society a whole lot more than alternative school. Government cannot say you can't home-school your kids, nor can it stop charter schools if the state has passed that option. And all teachers aren't liberal idiots. Teachers who don't work out do get fired despite the NEA's efforts - which are minimal when the teacher is bad news. The NEA doesn't want to waste their money on some stupid teacher. sure, there's many many dedicated, effective teachers in the system. But -- don't they seem to have a sort of sepia tint in your mind? a valiant rearguard, proving by their very exceptionalism the rule?
Not by my experience, Buddy. The lousy teachers had the muddy look, and the kids are the ones who painted them first.
The good ones shine like gold. I bet you can remember your favorite teacher and list all the terrific things about her. We all can. I hate this saying: Those who do, do; those who can't teach. I may not have gotten that right, but it's wrong. Teaching is really hard and it loses the bad ones quickly; but those who come back year after year, do it for the love of teaching. It sure isn't for the money. (I'm not talking about college professors, by the way.) meta -- by 'sepia' i didn't mean indistinct -- i meant 'old-timey'. but you are right -- i'm just juggling stereotypes -- the conventional wisdom (which ought to be called, "the fashion of the half-right").

Link's claim, that shrink vindicates Mikey and Annie sums it up. That is funny. Crank shrink idolizing "conservative" comedians who slander conservative leaders, won't vote and will campaign for HillBillary, that is really funny. Crank's book could be very, very funny but me level of happiness isn't so tanked (bottomed out) that it needs lifting. Re: Obama is a
Supporter of Infanticide. It can be assumed this humane positon was coached by his heart councilor, wife Michelle. In February 2004, U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the "alarming news" that "right-wing politicians" had passed a law stopping doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls. Michelle called partial-birth abortion "a legitimate medical procedure," and wouldn’t supporters please pay $150 to attend a luncheon for her husband, who would fight against "cynical ploy[s]" to stop it? http://www.bettnet.com/blog/index.php/weblog/comments/obamas_cold_eyed_pro_abortionism/ I wouldn't call her a supporter of infanticide -- I'd call her a liberal who as part & parcel of the politics is categorically opposed to thinking through the implications of the policies. what, does my description avoid the true issue? Yes -- and that's the point.
Neglecting the context will produce such a point, which isn't a point but whatever it may be, it is all yourn.
Killing folks who are delivered live from womb is infantacide. i meant their point, not my point. it's all theirn, not mine.
