We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The New York Times has never been especially vigorous about publishing letters from conservative readers complaining about the outpouring of hate, slander, innuendo and other species of satanic sputum from the mouth of Paul Krugman, as long as its target was George W. Bush and the Republican party. But when his column criticized Barack Obama's campaign for being a "cult of personality" based on "Nixonland" tactics -- in other words, when Krugman focused his hate on a liberal Democrat -- the Times has room for letter after letter after letter.
I find humor where I can NJ... your comment re Buffett being smart, which he undoubtedly is of course, as further illustrated in your link.
But then to discover in Surber's piece that;
"But why should I care how much money is in the wallets of the two richest men in America - Bill Gates and Warren Buffett - both supporters of the Obama campaign?
I hadn't been aware of Buffett's support of Obama. Buffett much be exceptionally smart to think that his business holdings will increase in value under a President Obama.
Take a listen ( http://tinyurl.com/39r4gw ) to what Michelle Obama's vision of American looks like. One must assume that her husband shares many of her thoughts and beliefs. If so, it will not be a good climate for business should he win the presidency.
Try to comprehend the liberal mind if you can. Jew hating Jews somehow equate Israeli soldiers not raping Arab women with raping them. How relativistically convoluted can you get? This harkens back to the previous link which reviews the book by Dr Rossiter claiming that liberalism is a mental illness. I have to get that book. Liberal Amazon reviewers will have a field day one staring this book.
Jon Landau got his letter published in the NYT. Wonder if that is the Jon Landau. Mr. Landau believes the war was created by a certain mindset that Obama is very, very good at denouncing. Interesting. Must say I have a problem with Mr. Landaus' mindset. Am getting so I really dislike the term progressive. Their policies and beliefs are mostly regressive. The socialist agenda, when enacted, has been proven wrong at great human cost, but the progressives believe this time it will be different. The progressives will now make bad policy and broken ideas work by changing peoples mindset. Seems todays progressives are often quite smart, and well off and somewhat exempt from the cost and consequence of a 'progressive' mindset.
To the Editor:
Paul Krugman, in his account of the strong emotions that the Clinton-Obama race has raised among progressives, doesn’t mention one notable fact.
Many antiwar Democrats continue to view with suspicion Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s attitude toward the Iraq war. Her clarifications for her support of the various pro-war bills proposed by President Bush revolve around her criticisms of the execution of the war, not around the thinking that led us into the war in the first place.
Progressives have found Senator Barack Obama’s more specific denunciation of the whole mind-set that created the war much more helpful. I believe that it continues to be a leading explanation for why he is doing so much better against Mrs. Clinton than anyone originally predicted.
Kosovo declared independence today. Russian gov't (and Serbia) is furious. The Kosovarians are largely Muslim. Look at the illo in the link--the Kosavarians are celebrating in the streets of Prestina, flying their own flag--alongside the Stars & Stripes.
I can't help but feel this is connected to the alliance America is forming with the Sunni street in the heart of Araby. America--American soldiers--are slowly winning the war to bring Islam into the first-world system, a goal that is as much about keeping scarce & critical global resources in that open-market first-world system as it is about terrorism per se. Keeping markets open is as much about preventing another world total war as it is about the prosperity of the people.
What Obama & Hillary are trying to do to this effort is incredibly destructive. They say they are just reflecting the will of the people -- but in truth they are directing it.
They need to start telling the truth -- about the stakes in this war, about the bankrupting entitlement programs, about the behavioral differences that create personal success & failure, about the power of critical-thinking, and about the sources of the nation's strengths.
They need to quit all this acid-corrosive hi-skool sophomore utopian victimhood baloney. They need to get unstuck off stupid.
