We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I'm not surprised that Venezuela produced a Chavez. I worked down there for years and was always amazed at how stratified the society was, and how little affection or respect the various strata had for the others. Lot of suspicion, cynicism, and resentment. Lots of very fine people, but the overall cultural atmosphere seemed very raw and unfinished--dreary.
Problem was--is--somewhat racial, broadly between the Spanish elite and the downtrodden Indians. Doesn't help that there's a good deal of differentiation in appearance--physiognomy and, yes, skin color. Of course, the left has its own elite, and it continually exploits all these real problems--and exacerbates them, cynically, while giving lip service to 'equality'.
The tragedy is that with oil so dear, Venezuela could be making rapid progress instead of whatever it is that it is doing.
right you are buddy. fyi they make beautifull leather shoes not that the mimister of buffonary would know. he belongs to the class of "chip on my shoulder" . I suspect the only socialism he knows is what Chavez tells him. The problem with Venezuela is the lack of education. It is a country with possibly 10% of the populace understanding anything outside of what happened in the last soap opera and I don't count their high school diploma as the true measure of an education. I t is hard to consider a high school education in the USA as a measure of literacy as well.
