Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Isn't it obvious at this point that we mean them no harm? Photo: Poodles can hunt. It isn't widely known that the breed originated in Germany, for duck hunting. They love marshes. The only problem with Poodles is that they are smarter than humans.

There's nothing like creating a list of people that annoy one to keep them even longer in the public eye. Most of the list is fine. However, I am one of those 19th Century types who actually enjoys Ann Coulter-- that is, whenever she is not beating on another dead horse of moribund, but still quite deadly Leftism. Besides, the Left has no one to compare with her mind and her looks--though both are fading properties.
Yes, I have no problem with Ann. She loves to be visible and provocative, and to say whatever comes to mind. A wild and crazy girl.
She's just razor-sharp. i always get the impression she's two steps ahead of everyone else on whatever panel or interview she's sitting in on.
"...on whatever panel or interview sitting in on which is she."
(fricken prepositions) I am in love with Ann. Strong medicine to state but is there anything in the world as sexy as an intelligent, witty, easy on the eyes woman who knows herself and isn't afrais of a darn thing?
She is a doll. Just to go down a slightly different path than BD, I don't think she says anything that hasn't been turned over in her very keen mind. She stikes me as being so quick of mind that she is what Gary Kasparov is to Elmer Fudd. Standard poodles were also used in WW2 as police dogs, along with Sheps and Dobies. Very intelligent, very protective dogs.
Investors Business Daily is beginning a series of edirtorials probing the Clinton-Chinese connection. I would highly recommend the MF folks to follow what IBD promises to be some "drilling down " into the issue
First installment. This should be a great series. The Chinese Re-Connection By INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Friday, October 26, 2007 4:20 PM PT National Security: Bill Clinton was the best president the People's Republic of China ever had. His wife may be even better. Beijing, hungry for more technology transfers, is betting on it. (remainder @ address below) http://lucianne.com/threads2.asp?artnum=367177 Mark Steyn is the best writer out ther today on current events. His most recent effort offered this gem:.....
From "Mark Stein..War, like life is not a movie" especially when you're up against cultures where life is still defined by how you live as opposed to what you experience via media a bit more.... "That's the flaw in the thesis: Robert D. Kaplan, a shrewd observer of global affairs, has referred to the jihadist redoubts and other lawless fringes of the map as "Indian territory." It's a cute joke but a misleading one. The difference between the old Indian territory and the new is this: No one had to worry about the Sioux riding down Fifth Avenue, just as Burt Reynolds never had to worry about the mountain man breaking into his rec room. But Iran has put bounties on London novelists, assassinated dissidents in Paris, blown up community centers in Buenos Aires, seeded proxy terror groups in Lebanon and Palestine, radicalized Muslim populations throughout Central Asia – and it's now going nuclear. The leaders of North Korea, Sudan and Syria are not stump-toothed Appalachian losers: Their emissaries wear suits and dine in Manhattan restaurants every night. Life is not a movie, especially when your enemies don't watch the same movies, and don't buy into the same tired narratives. To return to that 1996 presidential race, Bob Dole, apropos Pat Buchanan's experience hosting a CNN talk-show, muttered testily at one point, "I was in the real crossfire. It wasn't on television. It was over in Italy somewhere, a long time ago." Happy the land for whom crossfire is purely televisual and metaphorical. But, when it turns real, it's important to know the difference." the link. http://lucianne.com/threads2.asp?artnum=367221 or go to the source article at
http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=278291149224647 I like China as a trading partner--sure, there's some rocky patches that need work (Yuan/Dollar for starters) but by and large it's been good for the building of long-term hard & soft assets of all kinds in most of the world--including the First World, including the USA. With several billion people coming up out of life on the edge of extinction (even tho the freedom from want sprouts jihads and hugos), long-term prosperity has gotta be good--else we have some very fundamental philosophical tenets backwards. That said, and "however", there is a ChiCom faction that operates in a whole different arena, and we'd best be able to hold two contradictory thoughts simultaneously in our minds. while we're in Grimville, and per Mandela-refugee Kim, this is in the news:
http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-10-26-voa21.cfm "In the largest post-apartheid direct investment deal in South Africa, the state-controlled Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, ICBC, has purchased 20 percent of Standard Bank, South Africa's largest lender." Folks should remember 80s presidential-hopeful Ted Kennedy's role in using the power of US trade sanctions to ruin two fine, self-suffient, prosperous African nations which are both now suffering--and that's everybody of all colors suffering--societal breakdown. Both Rhodesia and South Africa were in the process of liberalizing their own societies at a sustainable pace, when Kennedy, eager for some campaign ink, hit them both in the back of the head with an axe. Now, Zimbabwe is starving and murdering itself to death under Idi Amin-ish tyrant Mugabe, and South Africa is reeling under a catastrophic breakdown of law and order and all the other hard-won institutions of civil society, and the natural rise of fascism in the vacuum. And all because of some meeting Teddy had with his brain trust back when he thought he could be president. Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as horror. Happiest poodles I ever met where a pair that went from lap dogs to farm dogs. Made good rabbit and squirrel dogs.
I discovered that curious fact about poodles as retrievers when researching our current dog, Big Ben, a standard poodle. Wonderful, smart, agile dogs -- and it's true, they are smarter than a fair amount of people I know.
Here's my post on Ben, which contains a few other, er, interesting facts about poodles. link didn't survive posting:
http://docisinblog.com/index.php/2006/02/25/meet-gentle-ben/ I’ve heard some saying that Brittany’s are the best at being ‘all-purpose dogs’ - go from being dressed up by 5 year old girls, to field work, then back to the girls clubhouse without too much fuss and bother. But maybe standard poodles are better?
But it sure is a shame when you see the more specialized dogs kept by ignorant owners - like the chained up beagle that howls non-stop out of sheer frustration at not being able to track some interesting varmint smell. well i threw that in not wanting to insult any urban dwellers who might have to resort to it at times. but you're right, it was mealy-mouth.
We have a Maltese/Poodle cross--smarter than any field dog we ever had including Spaniel. However, I am now looking for something that will respond well to snakes and bears--any ideas?
