Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

A "shout out" to the Boston Herald

The Herald should run a weekly Friday or Saturday feature entitled something like "Bay State Life" or "Notes from a Cabinetmaker," written by this guy, along with the photos he finds.

It would sell newspapers. I guarantee it. You could get him for cheap, because he is an undiscovered jewel: tasteful, hip, wry, dry, but tender and sentimental at the same time.

I do not have the words, nor the ability to string them together, to adequately express my opinion of the high quality of his writing. "Craftsman" will have to do; he puts words together as well or better than he puts furniture together--shaping, sanding, and finishing.

Nice observation --the craft connection across disciplines.

"Art" is a damaged word, but "craft" isn't.

Wordsmith. A cross between Hemingway and Bradigan. Hes got the gift. Too good for a sh-t rag. He should write short stories or novels.

I could not agree more. I first had the pleasure of reading his essays by linking through your site. Now a regular part of my on-line perusals.

BD & Sean, are you perhaps referring to Brautigan, as in Richard?.

Yup. Only I spelled his name wrong and you spelled it right. The guy who wrote Trout Fishing in America, Springhill Mining Disaster, In Watermellon Sugar etc. Great prose poet. Poor fellow killed himself and nobody noticed he was dead for 6 weeks. Talk about falling out of favor. He was a minimalist, but he put all the words in the right places. That is why I lumped him in with Hemingway, only Brautigan was a more poetic writer. Sippican has the same gift only not the body of work yet. Lets hope he puts that gift to use.
