Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Legalize Prostitution?

A day or two ago The Barrister posted Kay Hymowitz on "Freedom Fetishes," which addressed the conflicts within Libertarianism. A good case in point is Moderate Voice's piece on legalizing prostitution.

A pure Libertarianism might suggest, as the latter piece does, "Why not? No-one is harmed, consenting adults, etc., so who cares?"

What's the correct answer?

The common arguments for legalizing prostitution are getting tiring. No matter how many times they get blown up, people forget it and bring them back around again.

I wouldn't mind so much if the discussion actually proceeded to another level after the first round. If, after objections were raised to the pro-legalization arguments, there were attempts to refute those arguments beyond mere repetition, I would be more impressed.

The only good argument against I've heard was given me by a old Southern gentleman. "Son, you legalize it, the ladies will own the town".
