Get your own damn army, not the best idea

I am all for reducing our force levels in the European theater to levels that will enliven the Europeans to build up their own forces. I think that reduction would have to be very steep, and the returns wouldn't produce the desired effect.

Having said that it is in our best interests to stay in those countries to perform intelligence gathering, have a conduit to influence elections, and in general do all the things that a rising China and resurgent Russia would more than be happy to do. And they will do it.

All of Europe is heavily socialist or down right Marxist with a veneer of capitalism.. Should we withdraw, believing it will force then into greater military self sufficiency and less socialism we are only fooling ourselves. Influence can be exerted in many ways and we must ,unfortunately for our own protection, remain engaged with populations whose commitment to freedom is not as vigorous as ours.

Whether we like the position or not we cannot disengage from being the worlds leader, take our ball, and go home. Should we, it would be less than a decade before we would be fighting from a vastly inferior position. One that no nation can afford to do in todays world.
