We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Steve Chapman writing in Human Events points out the obvious. Rebuilding NO is a waste of money. The current figure being bandied about is 40 billion dollars. His math works that out to be about 60K per NO resident or for a family of four about $250,000. Asking the question would they take the money and run or stay in a floodzone waiting for the next hurricane, he correctly predicts most would leave.
A quite significant point he fails to touch on is whose money are we talking about. Of course it is the taxpayers, yours and mine. I for one do not want to give a family of four a check for a quarter of a million dollars because they wanted to live in a disaster waiting to happen.
We are truly at the point where our country is no longer more capitalist than socialist. It is now socialist with a patina of capitalism. We have long since passed the quarter of a million dollar "government" money give away to our African-American brothers and sisters. I'm sure the tariff in that demographic amounts to tens of millions per capita. It's similar to rebuilding New Orleans where it currently is and it must stop.
Similarly large segments of our Congress want a replay of the great give away to be repeated by adopting 20 million illegal aliens. That was stopped, or more accurately a hiatus from that goal initiated.
From the geography of New Orleans to the social engineering of our population the government is porking and redistributing the taxpayers money with manifest irresponsibility. It must stop. But who will do it?
The Republican Party now spends more than the Democratic Party does on social engineering and pork.
Who will save us or will it take a massive tax protest of not filing taxes? I am quite sure that if 50 to 100 million Americans refused to file there would be nothing the government could do. The savior there is that the rich and super rich pay about 93% of all taxes anyway and they will file, so the government will simply be forced to contemplate a revolt of the masses, and adjust accordingly or pay the consequences.
OK, Labor Day weekend in the USA. Families kick'n back enjoying la dolce via. As an extra, college football is back, baseball is moving ever closer to the playoffs and World Series ..life is good. Lemme asks ya about a word, ok?
Laogai ? Mean anything to you at all? Laogai, Laogai.
Well chances are really ,really good that you support laogai weekly. Probably big time. Collectively we support laogai in the trillions of dollars.
Laogai are Chinese slave labor camps. They make things. Not just things but things for American markets. Hell everything you by now is made in China and most of it is made by slave labor.
Demonstrators from Tienemen Square, and the interior unrest in China keep these Laogai humming. To quote Kristin Jones in Dangerous Assignments:
Mass incidents” is the term the Chinese government uses to describe demonstrations, riots, and group petitioning. In January 2006, the Ministry of Public Security announced that there were 87,000 such incidents in 2005, a 6.6 percent increase over the previous year. Protests over corruption, taxes, and environmental degradation caused by China’s breakneck economic development contributed to the rise. But some of the most highly charged disputes have occurred over government seizure of farmland for construction of the factories, power plants, shopping malls, roads, and apartment complexes that are fueling China’s boom
They take the displaced and force them into Laogai so we can buy our toys, clothes and just about everything you can mention at our favorite American store for cheap. Yeah, for the lives of old men and women and children...I guess life is cheap...at least we don't have to look at them.
So enjoy Labor Day and next time you make up a shopping list , write at the top of it LAOGAI and remember the slaves who saved you a dollar.
