Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, August 29. 2007Three things from your Editor, plus old sailboat memories1. Man, did we attract a lot of comments on the Are All Repubs Pervs? piece. Some entertaining and emotional comments in there. I hope our debaters will want to return to Maggie's - it's good sport. But do we have to post about perversion to get people excited? Hmmm...that's an idea. 2. Fine piece by Tigerhawk guesting at Jule's place, on New Orleans. I was even moved to leave a comment, which is something I rarely take (or have) the time to do. "Moral hazard": there's a new concept for me. I mean, I know all about regular everyday moral hazards but did not know the technical definition. If I didn't learn a lot from this here blogging nonsense, I would not bother. 3. The USA is already mentally, if not literally, on the long vacation weekend. I can see that in our stats. Even our News Junkie is AWOL. Not to worry about getting DTs - we are cheerfully on the job, although we may go a bit heavier on the re-posts, while saving some fresh ammo for September. It has not escaped my notice that our Barrister has been unusually busy from his shady poolside hammock, laptop on lap no doubt as he alternates between snoozing and posting. I can picture him now, waking with a start and a notion, jotting a few lines as his wife's horses whinny in the distance, taking a sip of his G&T, then heading back to dreamland, maybe after a lazy dip in the pool as the Farmington River lazily and quietly flows by and the Kingfishers call overhead. Image: An old Lightning. Spent many, many hours racing them and tooling about. Watched them turn from wood to fiberglass. Nice boats with wonderfully-effective, if possibly over-powered spinnakers, but that outboard motor ruins the whole thing: God made paddles for a reason. I fondly remember days when a squall would blow through a race and 50 Lightnings with their spinnakers up on a broad reach would capsize in a minute. What a scene: a glorious and only slightly dangerous mess assuming everyone was good at underwater swimming. It is disconcerting to have a collapsed, water-laden spinnaker on your head when you are in the drink. Been there. Trackbacks

Heh. Habu and Buddy were on point in the Perv post comments. All lot of good comments from a whole bunch of folks. Very interesting stuff!
BD, thank you for the acknowledgement.
I think the reason we had such a great give and take is that we had some folks who we'd enjoy having come around more often. Seriously You folks who came and made some good points for the Democrats, well that's damned alright. You'll discove that I'm probably the mosy abrasive and polemic of the folks 'round here. Just calibrate that into your thoughts and you too will be going the Habu eye roll and moving on to make your point. Speaking once again only for myself but I've never been on a nicer blog with a more interesting scope of eclectic topics.. You folks should have seen our non political tribute to the iron skillett ..had quite a turnout...and it was fun, relaxing, away from the political ..folks could just enjoy ... So please don't think Habu's got the market cornered on ideas or any of that..why just a week ago Tom in Stamford had to gently break the news to me that the South lost the Civil War...and as good and smart as he is it took us three days to get there. So come on back. You can always start with a good thrashing of Richard Nixon, our greatest president, umm,ah, well he was a president anyway. Best regards Haha. Thanks, H.
Get outdoors and shatter some (empty) beer bottles with your handguns this weekend. You have done yeoman's duty with Maggie's this year. Not to forget to mention the magnificent Buddy who has a calm that we can only pray for. Good fun, and we appreciate it and enjoy it, greatly. Re eclectic: you ain't seen nothin' yet. Clearly all porn and perversion, 24 hrs/day is our ticket. Maybe a change in course for Maggie's? Bathroom stuff? Problem is that we aren't sufficiently perverted for that task. Cool trees are more exciting to us, altho we do have a bit of a thing for sweet, pretty females: I guess that may be too normal and dull for these internets. Bathroom stuff?
http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3AASD Up $1.43 today, yowza! Also new friends you'll find that I am a bono fide Master in Tu Quoque .
Tu quoque (Latin for "You, too" or "You, also" or in street argot, yo mama) is an argument that asserts or implies that a certain position is false or wrong and/or should be disregarded because its proponent fails to consistently act in accordance with that position; it attempts to show that a criticism or objection applies equally to the person making it. It can be considered an ad hominem argument, since it focuses on the opposite party itself, rather than its positions. BD,
As you I am sure are aware the South did not present medals to any of their troops of any rank for any reason. The highest accolade you could receive was to be mentioned in an official report, so as I said, I am honored. "As you I am sure are aware...(etc)"
I'd put the chances at near zero that BD knew that about the armed forces of the CSA. No insult intended, but it is a hugely arcane bit of history. But maybe not for lack of trying. According to Antietam on the Web:
http://aotw.org/exhibit.php?exhibit_id=75 "Although authorized by legislation of the Confederate Congress, and approved by President Davis in October 1862, no Confederate Medals of Honor were ever issued to soldiers. Due to financial pressures, metal and other shortages, and opposition from some persons in authority (probably including General R. E. Lee), nominations were not acted upon". There was a Roll of Honor instead. Interesting speculation about Robert E. Lee. I wonder if there exist any recorded thoughts of his about the propriety or impropriety of so doing. More at: http://www.medalofhonor.com/ConfederateHonorRoll.htm This page also describes an unoffical medal given by the citizens of Houston to soldiers after Sabine Pass. great links.
"There were 27 Medals of Honor awarded to Federal soldiers for valor in the Campaign. 5 in the Battles at Crampton's, Fox's, and Turner's Gaps on South Mountain on September 14, 21 at Antietam on the 17th, and one for Shepherdstown on the 20th." Lordy --those place-names. So much power in them. I'm intrigued by the possible opposition of Robert E. Lee to awarding medals. I can see the pro and the con. I just wonder if we have his thoughts on this somewhere...
Skook,
I fairly confident somewhere in my reading that I've come across the reason for no medals. Wheather it was from Lee or Jefferson Davis I don't recall..Since it wasn't until June of 1862 that Lee took command in the East I have a feeling it was Davis who thought that to single out one man for a medal would do more harm than good, so they eschewed it. The North used the MOH. More than that brevit ranking was used to honor bravery in battle. Custer, although graduating near the bottom of his class at WP was brevited up to Brig General in a flash because he was fearless and got'er done.

Who knows? On the one hand, there is the Virginian aristocratic ethos. On the other, not giving out medals sounds somehow in keeping with what a very Scots-Irish folk army might want.
North American Union & SPP
A week or more ago the president was in Canada meeting with the leaders of that country and Mexico. Quired by a Fox new reporter about the NAU & SPP, the president didn't answer the question but rather ridiculed it as a propeller beanie crowd conspiracy fantasy. But it won't die... Late, Great USA, No. 8 on N.Y. Times biz list Controversial exposé on North American Union a quick best-seller fter becoming a New York Times best-seller just weeks after its release, "The Late Great USA" – which exposes government plans to promote integration of the U.S., Mexico and Canada – is No. 8 on the paper's list of hardcover business books. Written by Jerome Corsi, Ph.D., co-author of "Unfit for Command" which became a No. 1 New York Times best-seller and a decisive influence in the 2004 election, "The Late Great USA" exposes the multifaceted plan to turn the U.S., Canada and Mexico into a North American version of the European Union. Corsi's book, which already has reached the No. 1 spot on Amazon's "Nonfiction" list was No. 28 on the Times list overall list last week. Although the book has attracted a firestorm of reader interest nationwide, the Bush administration is less enthusiastic, with Commerce Department spokesman Richard Mills attacking Corsi's analysis comparing what's happening in North America to the stealth process that brought about the European Union over the course of 50 years. "The fact that 'The Late Great USA' is already in its third printing and is a New York Times best-seller," said Corsi, "shows that people are getting the message about our government's indifference – if not outright contempt – for what American citizens want, which is a free, strong and independent United States." The author added: "The defeat of the recent Senate immigration bill proves that our voices about the importance of American sovereignty are being heard. But clearly, George W. Bush still isn't listening – or just doesn't care." Understanding the plan to merge the U.S., Mexico and Canada, says Corsi, is "the only context in which the current immigration travesty makes sense – and it must be stopped." In "The Late Great USA," Corsi shows how the Security and Prosperity Partnership, or SPP, an agreement signed in 2005 by President George W. Bush, Paul Martin of Canada and Vicente Fox of Mexico, is nothing less than a full-frontal assault on American sovereignty. This aim to create a North American Union between the United States, Mexico and Canada is the real reason behind "comprehensive immigration reform." Says Corsi, Bush's goal to create a North American Union – with no borders, a shared currency, and utterly no voice for average Americans in their own futures – is the real reason he won't enforce immigration laws (I wrote this was the reason for not enforcing the immigration laws months ago and I've never read the book...but I have been following the story for over a year and it was just a natural fit..H) Utilizing thousands of documents released as a result of the Freedom of Information Act, "The Late Great USA" shows how unelected bureaucrats in faceless agencies such as the Department of Commerce have been given the power to foist the NAU on the American public incrementally. "The European Union, which now holds millions of voiceless, voteless Europeans in thrall to a heedless Brussels bureaucracy, was put into place little by little over a 50-year period," Corsi writes, "not by the citizens of the member states, but by elitists who disguised their goal of a regional government." In the book, Corsi details: 1. The tactics unelected globalist business leaders, bureaucrats and taxpayer-funded academics are using to lead to the merger of the United States with Mexico and Canada 2. How the state of Texas is seizing millions of acres of privately owned land so foreign investors can cash in on a NAFTA "super-highway" from Mexico to the Canadian border. 3. How China, through its proxies in Mexico, plans to bring the world's sole superpower to its knees economically – without firing a shot. "A North American Union would not just be the end of America as we know it," claims Corsi, "but the beginning of an EU-like nightmare – a bureaucratic coup d'etat foisted upon millions of Americans without their knowledge or consent." "The Late Great USA" is a meticulously researched story of deceit, the chapters of which are being written in secret. "The Security and Prosperity Partnership is not just unconstitutional, but an act of treason at the highest levels," he says. "Anyone who cares about the future of this country – our children’s future – must act now against a North American Union and the underhanded way in which our sovereignty is being compromised, one illegal alien at a time." Meet Carlos X. Carrillo, the Perfect NAU Border Patrol Chief By Chip McLean | View comments Meet Carlos X. Carrillo, national disgrace. Usually when people wish to conceal the truth, they, and politicians especially, will use deflection techniques. Bill Clinton during his two terms in office was a master at playing the deflection game. The Bush Administration has engaged in deflection as well, with the President shrugging off questions about plans to create a “North American Union.” After meeting recently with Mexico's President Felipe Calderon and Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Quebec to discuss the Security and Prosperity Partnership, Mr. Bush chose ridicule as a means of avoiding answering a direct question about the true goals of the SPP, claiming its opponents were using “scare tactics.” By branding those of us connecting the dots on this move to erase our national borders and sovereignty as conspiracy kooks, Bush is attempting to keep Joe Six-Pack from learning of these plans, and keeping him focused on watching American Idol, or whatever is currently passing for entertainment. So where does one Mr. Carlos Carrillo fit into all of this? It has come to light that Mr. Carrillo, Border Patrol sector chief of Laredo, made a statement at a Laredo Town Hall meeting, as reported in the Laredo Morning Times, that was to say the least, provocative: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Border Patrol’s job is not to stop illegal immigrants. The Border Patrol’s job is not to stop narcotics . . . or contraband or narcotics . . . the Border Patrol’s mission is not to stop criminals. The Border Patrol’s mission is to stop terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the country. The Border Patrol’s job isn’t to stop illegal immigrants, narcotics and criminals? Perhaps Mr. Carrillo forgot to read his job description when he was hired in the first place. In any event, Carrillo has attracted the attention of congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO), who believes Carrillo should seek employment elsewhere: If the Border Patrol is no longer trying to stop illegal entry into our country, border states will have to set up their own border police to halt this flow. I think this will be news to the governors in Texas, Arizona, California and a dozen states on the northern border. Either Carrillo was speaking for the agency or he was not. If he was, then Congressional leaders will need to have a serious ‘sit-down’ with Secretary Chertoff and his Border Patrol Chief, David Aguilar. If he was not speaking for the agency, then Border Patrol Chief Aguilar should remove him for his unprofessional conduct. If Carrillo’s statement wasn’t enough to boggle your mind, the illogic used by a court in Kansas would have caused Star Trek’s Mr. Spock to start talking to himself. Court of Appeals Judge Hannellore Kitts overturned an illegal alien’s jail term, ruling that, “while it is illegal to enter the country without permission, it is not necessarily illegal for an illegal alien to remain in the country.” As they say, you can’t make this stuff up, folks. I agree that Mr. Carrillo should be removed from his position – his “talents” would be better served as a ticket taker for one of the Laredo movie theaters, where the definition of who gains entry should not escape his comprehension. Unfortunately, I see the Bush Administration doing nothing, as stopping illegal aliens from crossing our border has not exactly been one of their priorities. The fact is, Bush & Co., by doing nothing to stop it, have accomplished everything in order to facilitate illegal entry into the U.S. since gaining power. They suffered a setback when their amnesty bill went down in flames recently, due to the efforts of a large grassroots movement to quash it, but make no mistake – they haven’t given up. Amnesty is a major strategy in the move to erase our borders – the only question is when it will be revived. This is all part and parcel of something which is becoming easier to connect the dots – if one will only look. The NAFTA Super Highway, the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), U.N global taxation, illogical judges, amnesty for illegal aliens, failure to secure the border, the SPP . . . The “North American Union” would be a place where borders would be meaningless. Carlos Carrillo would be right at home. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- for above item
http://www.intellectualconservative.com/2007/08/28/meet-carlos-x-carrillo-the-perfect-nau-border-patrol-chief/ During the flooding event an engineering professor, who specializes in dams, dikes, etc. was interviewed on TV. It appears that the "leaders" of LA and NO have known for years that those walls intended to prevent this catastrophe were in dire need of re-design, and rebuilding. Little has been said that addresses the question: why was this problem not addressed sooner? Didn't like the money issue did they? It seems to me that LA likes BIG EASY money--not the hard work at any level that is required to make a sustainable community. What I see is a patching up repair job of the levees--but not the costly process of re-design, re-locate and build-the-things-right kind of effort! Sorry, from where I sit we just paid Mexico to take over a piece of the USA. Now, the liberals will really have what they want --a whole new way to support illegal immigrants. By the way--who is in charge down there? Oh I know--the democrats. You remember them the ones that demand good pay and good jobs, etc. Why don't they have their butts on the line down there helping African/Americans get the construction jobs? Please, please, please I have had enough blonde broads in leadership roles on that side of the aisle--Hillary was enough. That gal that heads up the leadership team in LA is a joke!! Too bad about her daddy, her husband, and who knows who else in the family political business. Sorry, bout the rant--but the levees are being patched not truly, honestly, and correctly re-designed, or rebuilt. What we did do is build a new conduit through which Federal Tax dollars will stream easily and with little interferences for years to come.
With regard to the argument that people live in CA (earthquakes), or that people live in the North (blizzards),or that people live in the midwest (tornadoes). I believe the Barrister would say this argument is not sound because of the numerical difference between the frequencies of earthquakes and the damage they cause compared to the frequency of hurricanes and the damage they cause. My thought is this--if you want to live down there get your free food from Mexico! 300,000 people in NOLA before the storm, 127 bbl spent, izzat $500K per person, or is me rithmetic off?
And only 60% of the residents have returned, and the rebuilding has only just begun. Yep, the Democratic Party model, in full bloom. The damn place is six feet below sea level and right in hurricane alley....just how insane are we? Where are the responsible members of Congress..forget that..where are the citizens standing up shouting "THE F'N PLACE IS SIX FEET BELOW SEA LEVEL, NOT A DIME FOR RECONSTRUCTION"
I know I'm not and I'm a Southerner but rebuilding NO at the same location makes no sense to me at all. |
