We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I have neither known nor pretended to know what would have been the best response of the British in No. Ireland in my lifetime. On the one hand, the people they were protecting the people from included heartless terrorists. On the other hand, some of the people who wanted the Brits there were also heartless terrorists.
I do know that the rationalizations on behalf of Sinn Fein made by supposedly peace-loving people have been ridiculous. If you browse the bookracks at Shannon airport, you will see mostly titles which minimize the depredations of the IRA and play up Orange perfidy. Just good boys who were a little excessive at times, y'know?
Americans have looked at many places in the world and wondered "why can't they just drop it, get a job, and get on with being happy?" I wonder if Ireland's economic improvement has created the context for this finally happening.

I suppose that Op. Banner is now over & as there is a reasonably robust peace in 'the province' we should be happy. Is the violence over? No, its just at a lower level that it has been for the last few decades. As conflicts go, its been running since Henry IIs time & its had more sequals than Die Hard. So, until the the next time.....
