We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
To me the more shocking than a pronouncement from the Vatican that is as clear as Barry Bonds use of steroids is the opening of the article.
Given the Muslim outrage the last time the Pontiff said something substantive about the history of Islam and the West, it has fallen to his secretary to make public observations about what is going on
Pope Benedict XVI’s private secretary warned of the Islamisation of Europe and stressed the need for the continent’s Christian roots not to be ignored.
“Attempts to Islamise the west cannot be denied,” Monsignor Georg Gaenswein was quoted as saying in the weekly Sueddeutsche Magazin to be published Friday.
“The danger for the identity of Europe that is connected with it should not be ignored out of a wrongly understood respectfulness,” the magazine quoted him as saying.
That the Pontiff has kowtowed to Islam by not making the pronouncement himself is an act of ignominy.
If Christianity is to face the growing demographic overtaking of it by Islam it would be better served by a Pope who has the courage to face the challenge at the head of his Church, not behind a secretary reading from a parchment.
One early Fall morning while deep in the Montana territory camped near the Missouri River I awoke a bit after day break to see within ten feet proximity to one another a deer and a red fox. I quickly grabbed my camera and snapped a great picture.
Since they were a bit above me on a sloping hillside it almost looked like a posed picture. It made me smile.
