We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
There is no longer a single country in Europe where people are having enough children to replace themselves when they die. Italy recently became the first nation in history where there are more people over the age of 60 than there are under the age of 20. This year [1998 - DS] Germany, Greece and Spain will probably all cross the same eerie divide. [link]
"Even though senior citizens are the wealthiest demographic group, your organization is forever finding new reasons to take trillions of dollars from working people to give to your constituents, so they can go on cruises while working families are struggling to pay the rent."
During the Cold War, two things came to be known and generally recognized in the Middle East concerning the two rival superpowers. If you did anything to annoy the Russians, punishment would be swift and dire. If you said or did anything against the Americans, not only would there be no punishment; there might even be some possibility of reward, as the usual anxious procession of diplomats and politicians, journalists and scholars and miscellaneous others came with their usual pleading inquiries: "What have we done to offend you? What can we do to put it right?" . . .
Hate to keep flogging the horse, but western European socialism causes tax structures that--according to European twentysomethings my own kids know, make raising children a whole lot harder to afford than it is over here.
Again, you have to ask, what sort of system liquidates itself?
There is still some controversy, but whales are genetically most closely related to hippos among living animals. The superorder that contains the whales and the artiodactyla is named Cetancodonta. So, whales are likely more closely related to pigs and goats than to dogs.
Well, they do share a similar porpoise in life- eating, playing and befriending man on occasion. They catch Frisbees and slap their tails. Lassie and Flipper both barked, and we understood them. Would've been great had they had a spin-off show together, but we moved on to loving the humpback whale and panda, instead.

Haha. Finally, a JD Salinger aficionado. "Catcher" was his worst book, wans't it?
LOL. Although, I never bought into Salinger’s “all children are innocent and then fall off the cliff into corrupted adulthood” theme. Some people are born aggressively hostile or manipulative and show it early on. To me, personalities and character are not solely a matter of ‘nurture’ and don’t just manifest themselves at a coming of age.
His zen outlook was a theme for the time, tho’, and remains kinda timeless. I both enjoy and am annoyed by it, preferring instead the goal of expanding consciousness rather than obliterating one’s uniqueness (not supposed to be goal-oriented, though, so how to reconcile either ‘mission’?) The kid is exploring it all now through meditation, which is fine, as long as the exercise of ridding Self of ego doesn’t impinge upon real life.
*I may be remembering Salinger all wrong- haven't read him in two centuries.
