Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, May 12. 2007Saturday Noon LinksA vote for Romney is a vote for Satan, says one TV Fundie. That is the sickest thing I've heard today. Romney's dad ran for president, and nobody said that about him. And nobody has said it about the other Mormons in government, like Harry Reid. And isn't Orrin Hatch a Mormon too? This is just pathetic, if not downright evil. I don't mind fundies at all, as long as they worry about their own relationship with God, but leave other people alone to find their own way. Is there any reason for the FCC to exist anymore? Driscoll doubts it, and so do I. Let markets deal with it. The sources for information and entertainment, these days, go so far beyond broadcast that the FCC is obsolete. Psychotic breakdown at Tufts. Fortunately, good old FIRE is on the job. I hope this story gets around, because it is a truly shameful thing for a fine American university. I read about it first at Powerline, and now Wizbang has an update, with good excerpts from Volokh. Yes, it's about those hypersensitive Moslems who must be protected from facts. Not that the Moslems are complaining so much - it's the loonies who want Islam to be a "protected class." I am opposed to windmill farms, but the Cape Wind story is hilarious anyway. Update from Libertarian Leanings. Why am I opposed to windmills? Because wind power is a joke and will never, despite subsidies, make a meaningful contribution to our energy wants. It's just "feel good" stuff, like fluorescent lightbulbs Sperm donor must pay child support? Not a joke. Hey fellas: God should have put a warning label on that thing of ours. Now Farmer's Branch, TX wants to be rid of their illegals. They are voting on it. Viking's Quote of the Day: "The more you fail, the more money they throw at you," he said. "We're filthy rich; I don't want any more of your money. Send me quality teachers."

Real Minute Men do something:
http://www.gocomics.com/lacucaracha/2007/05/12/ Speaking of flourescent lightbulbs--had to check the batteries in the emergency flashlights in the stair well--in cas somebody wants to know if the lights are on.
I went ahead and installed them, even though each bulb is placarded "now for use in enclosed recessed fixtures". If the actual wattage is anywhere between what they say they are and 100 watts (what was in those fixtures before) I should be OK fire-danger-wise. A bigger problem is the upper floors where the cans require a suction-cup gadget for inserting and removal..... Wish I'd seen the fat Cape-Cod senator ad--sounds funny. Now, if someone would do one about the same senator using Fiji Island Trust Law to shield his estate from the tax that he so strongly endorses for everyone else but him to pay, that'd be funny, too. Nauseating, but funny.
I guess his constituency is not 'into' comprehending the notion of self-serving hypocrisy. I'm not so sure I would write off wind power so completely. About 5500 Megawatts (enough for 1.7 Million Homes) are under construction in Illinois, alone.
If I'm not mistaken it's competitive with coal in certain areas; and, although we will some day run out of coal we'll have plenty of wind (as long as Congress is in session, anyways.) :-) I agree. Latest global wind market report from the Danish consulting firm BTM Consult ApS is summarized on my blog at http://risingwind.blogspot.com . It finds 74,300 MW installed worldwide at the end of 2006. That's enough to supply as much electricity as 20 million U.S. households use, and BTM Consult predicts that the industry will expand by 17.4% annually through 2011.--Tom Gray, American Wind Energy Association
TG:
That is interesting. We have been wrong before! And will be wrong again. Will read and post that info next week. Wind farms and the Cape Wind book are a joke, I agree. Here is my take on that silly book:
10. Use it to wrap dead fish that will float in from Horseshoe Shoal 9. Saute it in leaking transformer oil - with a little salt water 8. Make it into a life raft for sea ducks, plovers, and terns that will be zapped by the rotors 7. Grind it into food for out of work fishermen 6. Sell it aboard the high speed ferries as Nantucket Sound flotation devises 5. Convert it into barf bags for passengers aboard airplanes that will have to soar and dip around the turbines 4. Use it as a deflector for confused radar at PAVE PAWS 3. Transform it into novelty sun visors for tourists who will flee the Cape and Islands for New Jersey 2. Issue it in paperback with a revised title, "Breaking Wind" 1. Burn it for fuel in Jim Gordon's Chelsea diesel power plant In the immortal words of Tonto, when the wild Indians were all over 'em and the Lone Ranger said "looks like we're done for":
"whaddaya mean "we", Paleface?" I am a nuclear guy. It's a free lunch. Fission, fusion, I don't care which. They can build it on my farm - it wouldn't bother me a bit.
BD, the last I heard the price of uranium was exploding (wow, I AM a Pun dit.)
I'm not against nuclear, but it looks to me like it might be a good idea to keep an eye out for plan b. Appropo of nothing much.... http://www.wunderground.com/severe.asp shows "Winter Weather Statements" for most of the counties in MI (mid to upper 20's some of them say), some in WI, NY, and ME.
Nobody ever even tried to open the throttle 'full' on the Stanley Steamer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Steamer "Hey fellas: God should have put a warning label on that thing of ours."
Dunno about a warning label, but I several copies of a book that all have several warnings, commands even, about what you are supposed to do with it. The circumstances under discussion are well covered. Oh, THAT book! aka "The Owner's Manual." Yes, it does cover it, doesn't it?
