Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Saturday, March 10. 2007Saturday LinksSome clips from The Great Global Warming Swindle at Never Yet Melted - appropriately enough. Will this get the Oscar next year? Another Bush lie. We know there are no Al Quaida in Iraq, so this must be an error. (h/t, Viking) Slightly used mobile homes, real cheap. New movie "300" drawing big crowds. Cool. The Mayor of Hazleton, PA wants to start a movement to address the burdens of illegals. Small Town Defenders More on the French mandating work-time naps. A sign of the true nanny state is requiring a Nursery School tradition of adults. How about milk and cookies too? The defection of the Iranian General proves that the US has not been sitting on their hands. Sounds like a major intel coup to me. Do rats have consciousness? Some evidence that they are capable of metacognition. Does this mean that they have souls? Adding to blogroll: EU Referendum A statement by someone at dinner last night: "Putin is the only Western leader who uncompromisingly puts his own country's interests first."

One never knows why intelligence agencies divulge certain things but if this Iranian general defected it should have been kept quiet.
Hezzbullah now can make necessary changes in certain areas predicated on what they know this guy knows. It would have been better to have faked his death and that of his family. I mean why is it that with everybody on the "deck of cards" once caught was trumpeted to the world? For one thing it makes interrogation more difficult, movement more high profile, and in general simply complicates the entire thing. Now having said that if you want to observe your adversary making changes in coded transmissions or other operational matters then you let them know you have the person , but not the entire world press which will ALWAYS muck up an operation. From a clandestine point of view it raises the entire profile which is not what you want to happen until and if you want it to happen. It's become like an Easter egg hunt with four years olds squeeling with delight every time they find a new egg. I suspect that the defection was leaked to undermine Ahmadinejad further. Iran would have known what happened anyway.
Small town defenders need to consult Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for some instruction on how to deal with the situation.
He likes to dress his inmates in pink, but there's an entire world of pastels out there begging to get inot the fray. Prisoner Puce, Criminal Crimson, Peach Probation, Orange Offender, Lavender Lawless, Red Rowdy, the list is endless. The method of transporting them back to the border. Chain then together, get a Ford F-350 with a hitch and "walk" them back through the desert. Or since President Bush refuses to do anything to halt the immigration, in fact it's entirely resonable to say he is abetting it we just send them to his ranch. Fortunately, it's Spring Break here, so 300 won't be sold out. I hope. Plus, it's at the new theater that just opened two weeks ago, and nobody knows it's there yet (and it's only two miles down the road).
NJ,
There have been many many defectors who have been sent back inside for more information. It is nowhere near a given that the Iranians knew what was going on. In fact in the first few days there was a huge amount of speculation as to what was going on. You just don't give away that you have the guy. You dissemble, lie, do anything to keep the other side in turmoil for as long as possible. By doing so someone makes a mistake which leads to other doors to opening. Take the case of the Cambridge Five, Kim Philby,Don Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt,John Cairincross or more recently the use by the KGB of Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen. Intelligence and particularly counter intelligence has always been considered to be a "hall of mirrors", but one thing you don't do is immediately unmask a defector. You lose far more than you can ever gain no matter what you think the other side may think they know. Isn't the "300" about the Battle of Thermopylae ?
Why is it then when I see the rushes on TV it looks like a cartoon show?...lots' of animation, men doing uber leaps over 20 feet, etc. Or is this not about the Battle of Thermopylae? "Do rats have consciousness? Some evidence that they are capable of metacognition."
But will they get their own departments in colleges and special degree programs? Will they have their own campus clubs and be represented at Diversity Days? Will rat jokes be banned and a hate crime category established for them by the City of Oakland and upheld the 9th Circuit Court? Will they get seats on the board of directors of PETA. See, you start searching and you open up a can of worms. And speaking of worms, have you read the new study that worms can actually do higher....? Rats, yes, but the case for metacognition among DemocRATS is still out.
Would agree with the statement about Putin and would add the government of Isreal. France masks itself in the EU and UN but somehow never seems to give up anything of importance while taking what it can.
I guess I'll never be accepted as a true-blue conservative, but I guess I'll get along. But I do wonder that there apparently isn't any cognitive dissonance here on what appears to be the Conservative Position On (Illegal) Immigration.
Did Prohibition work? Was Tulare Lake a good idea? Did the Alien and Sedition acts work well? How did your ancestors get here? It is my opinion that the world would be a much better place if all of the US government agencies whose acronyms start with "I" and end with "S" were abolished, if the money being spent on the stupid, useless, and hateful wall were spent on any of a number of other things, or simply burned. Do you remember how successful the Berlin Wall was? But they were the "right" kind of people.
But part of my beef is this: I was born here, and it seems contrary to what I was taught to believe to have to wait in a long line of cars every now and again to show my papers and so on. And I ask again: How well is the "War on Drugs" working? How about the "War on Poverty?" And the War On Brown People? Mr. Sheldon:
I have Indian ancestors. But they were a later wave of Bering Strait immigrants, and displaced the Indians who were here. Mr. S:
You are sniping but not discussing. Re immigration: we live in a democratic republic. It's up to us as a nation to decide on our immigration policy, just as every other nation does. It can be changed by congress, perhaps to better address the wisdom of the people and changing circumstances. But, as it stands now, the law is the law - like every other law. If you want to change the laws, then say how you want them changed. Your browser must be broken. Mine shows me where I said "It is my opinion that the world would be a much better place if all of the US government agencies whose acronyms start with "I" and end with "S" were abolished, if the money being spent on the stupid, useless, and hateful wall were spent on any of a number of other things, or simply burned."
Let me if I can say it another way that will get through your filter. And when the damned captcha shows "AB CD" it ought to accept "AB[space]CD or show instructions to ignore white space. I would like for the Congress and others to learn that making crimes out of things that didn't used to be crimes serves mostly to make a lucrative new niche for criminals that didn't exist before. (Please see "History, Prohibituon". for example.) Not sure how I butchered that--the useless rant about the captcha should have been clear at the end.
(Yes I know why there is a captcha. But there has to be a way that humans can figure out what it wants.) I am sorry there has to be a captcha, wish it wasn't so. Click the word "link" below to get to the full video of the Great Global Warming Swindle.
