Perhaps it is because religions of all casts have a history maked by the same venalities and turpitude the afflict mankind in general, except the religious hoo-do focuses these qualities on the individual while giving itself greater lattitude to pursue them instituationally and bestow a forgiveness on itself simultaneously.
Religions have histories resplendent with all the horrors of mankind. Christianity is the chosen foil in this country because it is better known, we are a Christian country and therefore the larger audience is addressed. It is easier for the common man to follow the arguement between Protestant and Catholic than it is between Shite and Sunni.
The latter to us is a parody of "Who's on First?"while the second can engender white hot heat between parties here more easily.
There is also a strong component of the atheistic nirvana Hegel and Marx promised which is still en vogue amongst the anointed press.
