Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Saddam Execution

The Anchoress took the time to assemble a good round-up of comments and reactions.

Do I think it is morally right to execute leaders who have been defeated in war? I have real doubts about that, but it was Iraq's call, not ours. In the Middle East, execution is a casual and routine matter, and they do not seem to value human life in the way that the West does. "It's multicultural, ya know?"

It has been always darkly amusing to me how "multiculturalism" can be so selective in its reverence.

I do not understand your thought that he was executed for losing a war. I was of the opinion that he was executed for barbaric cruelty, torture, denying the access to a legal defense, etc., etc. He was a monster and so were his sons. Perhaps, because this event has taken place during that moment of time when we are considering the genuine sense of fair play, and concern for our nation that one of our leaders displayed, we are somehow ameliorating the vicious intention of he who was properly sent on his way this morning!

No, I didnt mean executed for losing.

I am just thinking about the general principle that a victor can always find some justification for this sort of thing. Sherman burned Atlanta. Could Jeff Davis have hung Sherman, had the Rebs won?

I am just thinking about the principle, not about Saddam, who for practical purposes is better off dead. I shed no tears for him, believe me.
