Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The Psychology of Erotic Desire"
Over thinking of something very easy to understand. QUOTE: Spain Without Spaniards: The Unprecedented Decline of the National Population Spanish ethnicity is an historical amalgam of Basque, Celtic, Latin, Germanic, Jewish, Arab and Berber, and modern European influences. Current migration is primarily from Latin American and Europe, with only about 15% from Africa, mostly Morocco, which has a long history with Spain. Not to mention early Phoenician influence, and Catalonian culture still resisting integration.
Watch it, you'll upset Z who probably lives in a gated community with no invaders. Currently reading new book out called "Suicidal Empathy" by Gad Saad, recommended, explains a lot of the West's decline. (I agree about the boats)
Difficult to sink the boats without drowning the occupants. Our goal ought to be keeping them out, not to kill them.
Speaking of 'suicidal empathy'...

Intercept the boats at 12 miles from shore. Arrest and jail the leaders, not the immigrants but the captain and any NGO people. Tow the boat back to 12 miles offshore where it came from and let them find their own way back to shore. Do it every time with every boat.

Dusty: I don't favour "suicidal empathy", but gather from your comment that you are ok with a homicidal policy?

I believe the Spanish people have a right to defend themselves from foreign invaders, if that's what you mean.

Dusty; We all believe the Spanish have a right do defend themselves from invaders. The problem to be solved is by what means and where exactly is interdiction/repelling of said invaders to take place- 12 miles or more miles offshore? Would that not be a death sentence? And how does one sink the boats without killing the "passengers" ? "Sink the Boats" is simply a feel good slogan without proposing a viable policy. I think it is you that needs to answer "what you mean" when you write....." should have sunk the boats".

So what? I think the most important statement from the article is
QUOTE: One in every five people living in Spain was born abroad You don’t maintain your culture by having people who grew up in that culture replaced by those who didn’t. Yes, but they are still taking care of the really important things like banning cigarettes and bull fights.
"Current migration is primarily from Latin American and Europe, with only about 15% from Africa, mostly Morocco, which has a long history with Spain."
No kidding, Sherlock. The article said as much. Anon: So what?
Because Spanish culture has always been an amalgam, and like most cultures, has always been in a state of flux. (Note the separatist movement in Catalonia.) In this case, most of the immigration is from regions with close cultural ties to Spain, with the majority already speaking Spanish. That doesn't mean immigration doesn't cause cultural stresses, but that is not in and of itself unusual. Spanish population:
Pre-2005: About 3% foreign born 2026: About 20% foreign born Zach-bot: Shrugs and says "So what? Only about 12% of the foreign-born are Muslims from non-Spanish-speaking Morocco, they'll fit right in with the mostly secular Spaniards." Anything that helps bring down Western culture, which Spain most certainly is a part of, is welcomed by Z. Anon: About 20% foreign born
So, about 12% of 20% are Muslims, mostly from a country with long ties to Spain. Anon: Anything that helps bring down Western culture Let's review: Spanish culture is an amalgam of various cultures, including Romani and Arabic. Cultures are always in flux. Social strains are inherent in rapid demographic change, but it is not unusual historically. For instance, the influx of Catholics to the United States in the early twentieth century resulted in social strains, including anti-Catholic fervor, with some claiming it would lead to the subjugation of America to the Papistry. So, what is Spanish culture?
QUOTE: The Culture, History and Traditions of Andalusia It’s fair to say that when we think of Spain, we think of Andalusia. Such is the cultural influence of the southern region on our collective idea of Spanish identity that it is almost impossible to separate them. After all, who doesn’t think of the spotted red and black ‘gitano’ dresses of the flamenco dancers, the semi-sinister strike of the guitar, the tapas, the matadors, the Alhambra, the golden sands of Marbella, and even siestas when you mention Spain? ... However, perhaps its most enduring cultural influence has been provided by the almost 800-year rule of the Moors. The region takes its name from the Arabic word Al-Andalus, the name given to the parts of Iberia controlled by the Moors from the 8th Century until the Spanish Reconquista in the 14th and 15th Centuries. With the Moors came the huge advances in architecture and engineering that led to the wondrous Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba and the Alhambra of Granada, with the hilltop fortress’s stunning décor and gravity-defying water system. American Indian culture is an amalgam of various cultures from around the world, including French, Spanish, English, Dutch, Portuguese and Russian. Many Native American tribe names like Sioux and Nez Perce come from French while tribes like Comanche and Apache have Spanish names. Some places like Atoka and St Regis have English names but were part of the Indian nations. Native American culture has always been in flux and rapid immigration can sometimes cause societal strain. Oh well! Plus ça change…!

You wouldn't think that the reality TV participant who sells healing crystals would be the sanest candidate in the LA race, but Pratt clearly is. You wouldn't think that a campaign of "This place used to be great, now it sucks, the sad druggies are a big part of that, I'd like to fix it" would be that controversial either, but this is California, Jake.
If he wins he's not going to fix much, but even improving a few things and not letting other things get significantly worse would be the work of angels at this point. |
