We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Since approximately 1985 +/- , the number of science lecture and laboratory credits required for graduation from any college, or university, has been reduced. For example: for a BA student in the liberal arts--I see no requirement for Biologoy Lab, I see no requirement for hard core introduction to physics, or chemistry, with the accompanying labs. Those have been replaced with a politically correct lecture course taught about environmental pollution. The ability for each individual student to understand fundamental science theories, or to acquire the intermediate level of maths, or to actually work on basic science principles in the laboratory is no longer a requirement for most American universities.
I know of one university (private-extremely liberal, costly) that turned your basic bedroom sized sliding door closet into it's only science lab. There is a counter with two toy store microscopes. There is no requirement to use this "lab", it is just there to satisfy the North Central Accrediting agency, which accredits this pile of deception as being worth of a being called a university!
So, you want to know why? That is a big piece of the answer. The second part of the answer of course is "FUNDING", "FUNDING", "FUNDING". For example take a look at the millions of dollars the homosexual community has poured on scientists around the world trying to prove they are "genetically created".
Though real scientists have held out the longest against the politically correct forces in American academia one can begin to see that even they are crumbling under the terrible pressure to produce the "correct answers". It will be one h___ of a world when we loose the integrity affiliated with good science. Then there is that bunch of do gooders, who truly believe that science is just one more tool in white man's bag of tricks, that in fact it can be reduced to a philosophy.
