We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Jobs for kids

If you have a bright but somewhat directionless kid who isn't interested in school or the military, I have recently been made aware of a few interesting trades that are best learned by apprenticeship: Gunsmithing, Watch Repair, and Clock Repair. Iron fabrication is cool too.


So is making upholstery and covers for boats? So many cool skills. 


My clock repair guy has a 14-month backlog. Takes a while for learning though, like most things.

I knew a guy who did gunsmithing but gave it up years ago because the liability insurance was so high.

Earn a living with clock and watch repair? Who knew? Never would have occurred to me.

When I was a kid in the 1990's there was an old shoe repair guy in our town. My dad said I should go offer to learn the trade and buy his business. Now, YouTube is rife with boot making and repair channels with huge followings. Business is booming.

I might have amounted to something, but instead chose to study engineering. Who knows what might have been?

Back before they went insane, Colorado had an excellent and well attended gunsmithing school in Lakewood CO. . Casualty of the woke, I’m afraid.

A friend's grandson graduated from high school at 17. He is an apprentice auto mechanic at a local dealer. Starting wage of $25.50 an hour. There is no formal apprenticeship program. They just assign him stuff they figure he can do or learn to do on the spot. Beats having to be Woke-brainwashed in college.

Everyone seems to know that trades and apprenticeships are a great deal and pay handsomely. The guy who did my radon treatment (needed more for selling the house than anything) is constantly offering young people a chance to learn the skill and send work their way.

To the young in the mating and dating game these are still not as high status as college, even doing badly in a suspect field at community college. That's not fair or reasonable, but it is their reality.
