Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

That is incorrect. States have a measure of sovereignty under the Constitution, and sanctuary is an exercise of federalism. States can't impede federal officials, but nor can they be compelled to assist them. Cities may offer sanctuary, but only insofar as being consistent with state law. This was an issue during the pre-Civil War period. A free state couldn't protect Blacks from slave catchers, but neither could the state be required to find and send them into slavery.

You're incorrect. A declaration of being a sanctuary city is a declaration or act that encourages the illegal aliens to violate federal laws. Not hard at all to make that fit under the concept of sedition.

First of all, unlike illegal entry, unlawful presence is not a crime. Nor is having a state policy of not helping federal law enforcement a federal crime. It only becomes a crime if the state impedes federal law enforcement. This is due to the federal structure of the United States Constitution, under which states retain some measure of sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment.
