We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The EU is a suicide pact. Macron is working hard to destroy France and now wants to help the EU destroy Europe. Starmer is a communist and will destroy England. Bring back the guillotine !

What a foolish article. The number of nukes Russia has is irrelevant. Europe would be ashes from Belarus to Finland, from Finland to Rimini but 100 is sufficient to finish Russia as a nation and France and the UK together could release ~ 500. The only thing that would be left is some of Asian Russia and the cities there would be obliterated. The rest of the world wouldn't be in great shape either. Of course there are those who would claim that the US is treaty bound to retaliate but all that Article 5 of the UN charter says is that members would consider an attack on one as an attack all. The response is up to the individual nations.

The US declaring Nato article 13 would settle down the European War Dance and rid us of an obsolete defense agreement. Nato's Turkey invading Cyprus and the US 'nation building' in Kosovo are two good reasons to get out before trouble meet us halfway.

Any major nuclear attack by any country will likely end in nuclear war. Maybe if it were "just" Israel and Iran full scale war could be avoided. But if it's Europe and Russia it will involve the U.S. too. It would end 90% of life in the Northern hemisphere. Both Russia and China have been building bunkers not just for people but for military men and equipment and even essential industries. They plan to survive the nuclear war, at least to some extent. But most everyone else is toast, literally.

It's not the phones. Countries that have just as much teenage phone use as we do have not seen the same negative results we have. No suicide increases, depression/anxiety increases, no dropoff in grades or measured attention span.

I used to very much like Jonathan Haidtyand linked to him often, but he is just barking up the wrong tree on this one. It was plausible to consider the social media explanation, because it did coincide with changes in American teens. However, that explanation has not held up.

The worst lie we can tell ourselves in social interventions is "Well it just stands to reason..." Hypotheses must be tested.
