We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
All fun things that can be grown in a garden, even in the Northeast US.
Horseradish grows like a weed, but does not spread. I don't pull up the roots but just chop a shovel into the roots. Can buy the roots online. Growing Horseradish.
Interesting video. Family friends in Florida grew ginger, so I know it can be done. I guess that to keep it growing during the dry Texas summer, I'd need to follow directions and put it in a pot, so that water applied to the ginger plant stays with the ginger plant and not the whole garden.
I live in South Florida, but my apartment balcony only gets about two hours of direct sunlight a day, so hardly anything will grow well, but I grew ginger and turmeric very successfully on the balcony with only two hours of sunlight. The great thing about ginger and turmeric, at least in my experience, is that they have very few pests and once started, grow like weeds. I found them to be some of the easiest plants I've ever grown

Cool. I'm going buy some of both today and plant them this weekend. I'd probably use horseradish more often if I had it fresh. By the time I use a jar the second time it's lost it's heat.
I don't pay attnetion to the price of ginger when I buy it but $25/lb seems crazy expensive, even if you're just buying a little bit.
In this northernmost state farmers grow ginger and turmeric in steamy plastic hot houses. Horseradish is taking over my whole garden - it sure seems to be spreading fast
