Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re Europeans Defend Democracy By Plotting to Strip Hungary of Voting Rights and Canceling Romanian Elections
This comes up behind a paywall for me. However, there is a good story on Rumania here: [bDemocracy Dies In Romania... After 'Winning' In December, Georgescu Now Banned From May Presidential Election[/b] QUOTE: The decision to eliminate Georgescu from the May 4 presidential race will likely deepen Romania’s anti-establishment mood and benefit the far-right. Polls showed that had Georgescu run, he would’ve garnered between 40% and 45% of the vote in the first round, giving him a real chance of becoming Romania’s president. . . . Two weeks ago, the prosecutor's office has reportedly imposed the following restrictions on him and his campaign: 1) Barred from appearing on mass media 2) Forbidden from creating social media accounts A Romanian Court Press Release cites "attempted incitement against the constitutional order" (coup), "spreading false information," as well as "false statements on campaign funding," and links to "fascist, xenophobic, and antisemitic organizations." And that prompted yet more large-scale protests. . . . . Simply put, from the perspective of western liberal world order, Georgescu cannot be allowed to win because he takes the common sense approach that confrontation with Moscow does much more harm to Romanians than to Russia. And Romania is simply too important to NATO and the effort to weaken Russia. Washington and Brussels are already dealing with wayward governments in Hungary and Slovakia, but Romania is a different animal. . . . It’s entirely possible that Romania is just the start of annulled elections as the neoliberal war champions who call themselves the “center” would no doubt love the power to cancel elections wherever they see fit. https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/democracy-dies-romania-after-winning-december-georgescu-now-banned-may-presidential ""Pop-Up NGO Shells""
We need some legislative fixes to this problem. 1. All NGO's and non-profits banned from politics. And all of them must publish a public complete and detailed accounting of where they got money and where it went. 2. A federal agencies must publish a complete and detailed accounting of their budget and spending. Detailed down to the smallest line item. No federal money can be funneled directly or indirectly to NGO's. 3. Two IG's should be appointed to each federal agency every four years. One by the Democrat party and one by the Republican party. Their primary responsibility should be to verify and be responsible for the detailed accounting of the budget and reporting directly to congress AND hold a televised press conference each month where the press can ask questions until they have no more questions. The taxpayers deserve to know where the money is going and why. OneGuy: 1. All NGO's and non-profits banned from politics.
That would be a violation of the First Amendment. Even regulating their political spending may not work, as the right-wing Supreme Court essentially ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that money is speech. Since that decision, political funding from moneyed interests has exploded, effectively tilting power towards those moneyed interests (e.g. Elon Musk). Quite the narrative you have there. From the Borg alliance?
That would be a violation of the First Amendment.
Indeed. Anyone advocating for such deserves scrutiny as a potential authoritarian and criticism for the idea. Pity you have zero moral authority to offer such criticism since you have repeatedly defended LW censorship (including that done a the behest of the government) of RW and alt-left political speech. For example, you bemoaning the fact that SCOTUS ruled that people could not be legally prohibited from buying media advertising to advocate for or against a candidate (s) or issue(s). Strang how you suddenly become so principled when your ox is the one that might get gored. It's almost like you don't really have any principles. Indeed. Then we are in agreement—in part. Generally, we won't paint a commenter as "a potential authoritarian", even though we may criticize the idea. James: you bemoaning the fact that SCOTUS ruled that people could not be legally prohibited from buying media advertising to advocate for or against a candidate (s) or issue(s). One dollar, one vote: Just like the Founders intended. Every day there is new information about how Washington DC - The Swamp - is stealing our money. The politicians call the theft taxes; paying your fair share. It’s stolen from you with steel muscle; guns and the treat of imprisonment. All brought to you by the 16th Amendment, the worst mistake America ever made.
Don’t forget to blame the republicans for this. They sat idle, usually voting along with the democrats; continuing resolutions - we can’t afford to shut the government down, we’ll lose the election. But don’t worry, Republican voter, we’ll get em next time. But we need the House and the Senate and the White House. Hey, we gave you those things, a few different times. Hmmmm. I’m beginning to see a pattern here. Well, go on, hold your hearings. Caterwaul about it. Grandstand. But don’t charge anyone with a crime. Prosecute someone. Those actions might cause a butterfly effect like the world has never seen. It might expose the whole group of politicians in The District. It might blow the whole house of cards down. What then would the taxpayers do? Yes. The swamp is out of control B. Hammer. The parasites know it and take advantage of it and damn if there is anything we can do about it, DOGE's efforts not withstanding.
B. Hammer: The politicians call the theft taxes; paying your fair share. It’s stolen from you with steel muscle; guns and the treat of imprisonment. All brought to you by the 16th Amendment, the worst mistake America ever made.
Taxes in the United States, including the use of "steel muscle; guns and the threat of imprisonment", long predate the 16th Amendment. See Washington v. Whiskey Rebellion. The Whiskey tax was an excise tax. If you use it, you pay for it. If you don't use it, you don't pay for it. That is not how the income tax works as they take it whether you use any services or goods or don't use them. The dream tax of thieves.
Yes, an excise tax. A tax that even in British parliament as early as the 1730’s was described as “the devil’s remedy” and the “high road to slavery.” Especially since the burden of the tax fell most heavily upon people living in the frontier. A place where the barter economy was the norm. A tax that many revolutionary American veterans had thought they had fought and bled to be rid of. See Stamp Act 1774.
B. Hammer: an excise tax
That’s right. It was a tax levied by the federal government that was enforced by “steel muscle; guns and the threat of imprisonment”, specifically, by troops led by President Washington. B. Hammer: A tax that many revolutionary American veterans had thought they had fought and bled to be rid of. The revolutionary demand wasn’t the end of taxes or even the end of excise taxes, but no taxation without representation. You had used the quoted phrase to inflame, rather than to enlighten.

Right. The revolutionary war simply about taxation with no representation. Much more complex than that. So was the Whisky Rebellion. Those on the frontier complained about no representation. But you know that, right?

And by the way. I don’t object to paying taxes. I do object to the Uniy Party in Washington DC, confiscating 1/2 my income to redistribute to NGO’s and other such useless entities. Entities that have family members or close associates, who turn around and fill the campaign coffers of politicians. Possibly even bank accounts: see Joe Biden. We have no idea where all this money goes. However, DOGE is uncovering the corruption, and it is colossal.
Go ahead. Hand wave some more.

They had representation, but were out-voted and out-moneyed. That's a weakness of democracy, poor minorities may not always be heard. The original point remains: the use of force to tax is intrinsic to all government.

By What Authority Can Trump Create a Strategic Crypto Reserve?
QUOTE: No Vested Power to Fund This There is no vested power for Trump to fund a crypto reserve with taxpayer or Treasury funds. I am not sure who if anyone would have standing to block a crypto advisory committee, but I fail to see how Trump can get this legally funded without Congress or gifts that would then become government assets that Congress could appropriate. . . . And if you are foolish enough to be cheering for this, wait until Democrats use their “vested power” to do similar things. https://mishtalk.com/economics/by-what-authority-can-trump-create-a-strategic-crypto-reserve/ There is no authority to have government invest in crypto coins without the consent of Congress just as their is no authority to sell assets of the government without the authority of the Congress.
Presidents, previous to the Clinton/Gore administration tried to sell the Elk Hills oil reserve but could not get Congress to agree. Clinton/Gore sold the Elk Hills oil reserve to Armand Hammer without the consent of Congress. It was entirely illegal but as usual, no consequences. The Hartford Insurance is Canceling Coverage to the American Energy Institute Because It Promotes Carbon-Based Energy
QUOTE: The Hartford Insurance Company just notified the American Energy Institute that its insurance coverage is being cancelled because it’s the stated policy of The Hartford that it discriminates against carbon-energy advocates. This is in service to The Hartford’s radical Net Zero / DEI agenda. . . . This is an excellent opportunity for red states to make a statement. If The Hartford faces licensing cancellation across much of the United States, and if Christopher Swift finds himself having to lawyer up to defend against The Hartford’s discriminatory business practices, executives across corporate America might start to re-think their desire to be obedient apparatchiks in service to Klaus Schwab and Larry Fink. https://acecomments.mu.nu/?post=413971 Apparently they are not out to maximize profit. I wonder how the share holders feel about that? I imagine Blackrock and vanguard are cool with it.
But then there is this: BP wakes up. Pun intended. BP Boss Defends Fossil Fuel U-Turn BP boss Murray Auchincloss has defended the company’s move to increase fossil fuel production and ditch its renewable energy commitments. https://www.zerohedge.com/energy/bp-boss-defends-fossil-fuel-u-turn |
