We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
There is a wonderful book written back in the 1950s by a military officer called The Reluctant Warriors, primarily about the third Carthaginian war with Rome. It's fascinating. I'm surprised that no one has ever made a movie about what happened at the end of the siege of Carthage. Rome continued to demand concessions from Carthage year after year and Carthage always acquiesced and gave in they gave money they gave the children of the elites gave up the ships gave up their weapons each time the Romans wanted more eventually they told the people of Carthage they had to leave after they gave up their weapon and the people of Carthage realized their mistake at the end and then fortified the entrance to the city and actually built some ships in their inner harbor from the wood over homes and that women cut their hair to make ropes for the ships and they made weapons out of odds and ends in the city and then they broke down the wall from the inner harbor and the ships came out and attack the Roman ships which were amazed that's what was happening. But it didn't end well. The city was full of Roman soldiers who had switched sides and they knew what would happen to them when they were captured it was an incredibly bloody battle. The book also goes over how the Carthage people ended up killing Hannibal after he returned which is unbelievable. Sometimes you can find a copy on eBay.
