Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re No One Actually Objects to Resettling Gaza
Ok. Good. Resettle them. But who wants to take them? Greenfield makes no mention of where they should go, or who should pay for it. Finally, does removing the Palestinians also remove their overriding desire to kill Jews? Events of the last fourteen or fifteen months indicate an overiding desire by quite a few Jews to kill Palestinians, not all of whom held or hold such desires to kill Jews. Your justification to tar all Palestinians, including even their children, with the sins of Hamas is not justified.
The Israelis are usurpers, invaders and thieves, no less than the immigrants that the people of the United States rightly want removed from their own country. I have to ask myself - with dozens of tanks, and other vehicles, aircraft, hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition, nuclear weapons, air to surface munitions, artillery, and 10's of thousands of troops, I wonder if Hamas would've left any Israelis, or anyone else who happened to be in Israel (40 other countries had nationals kidnapped or killed 10/07) alive. Probably not, based on what they did with just small arms and a few hundred troops and "civilian" auxiliaries in tow. You can peddle your make the world Judenrein/Israel is genocidal crap elsewhere.
QUOTE: Wasn't Gaza part of Egypt? Yes, under the Mamluks, having driven out the Crusaders and Mongols. Been a while. By the 1300s, Gaza was "large and populous, and has many mosques," indicating the long history of Palestinian life in Gaza. 1967 map of Egypt showing them possessing "The Gaza Strip."

That's correct. After the All-Palestine Protectorate dissolved, the United Arab Republic then Egypt briefly occupied Gaza, from 1959 to 1967, but that doesn't make Gaza "part of Egypt", which has its own distinct culture and history. "Moslem" and "Palestinian" are not synonymous. Nor does 1300 AD predate 1000 BC.
James: "Moslem" and "Palestinian" are not synonymous.
Of course not. The people of Palestine largely converted to Islam and adopted Arab culture after the conquest, though some have remained Christians to this day. (Arabic speaking Christians use the word "Allah" for God.) James: Nor does 1300 AD predate 1000 BC. While Jews have an ancient history in the region, it's also clear that so do the Palestinians, confirmed by patrilineal genetic studies. Indeed, according to tradition, they share a common ancestor in Abraham. Most of the "Palestinians" are from surrounding countries and not native to Gaza. They have been known to travel to Jorden and Syria to visit relatives. Most of them came to that area in the 1920's as illegal immigrants.
Note how y-chromosomes show Palestinians nestled within Jewish groups. See Hammer et al., Jewish and Middle Eastern non-Jewish populations share a common pool of Y-chromosome biallelic haplotypes, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 2000.

"What's the difference between love and desire?" Better question: What's the difference between love and lust. Lust at first sight? Sure. Love at first sight? No. Love takes time, sometimes a lot of time.
For your comment to mean anything, you need to objectively define the ambiguous term "love." But even in its "highest" form, romantic love is inseparable from lust for most males. We fall in love with women we find sexually attractive. We do not fall in love with women we do not find sexually attractive. And we make our evaluation of a woman's sexual attractiveness within a few seconds of seeing them the first time.
"Events of the last fourteen or fifteen months indicate an overiding desire by quite a few Jews to kill Palestinians,"
Exactly the reaction any reasonable person should expect towards a people who daily repeat the vilest antisemitisms and repeatedly target Jewish civilians with violence almost every day for decades. There are over a million "Palestinians" living in Israel. There are no Jews living in Gaza. Yet you have the temerity to imply that Jews are the problem. They are not. But you are. Offer Gaza back to Egypt. If Egypt won't accept it, the Arab world has washed its hands of the matter and Israel can do what's necessary.
