We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
A national state of emergency has been declared last week in Trinidad & Tobago, nearby, due to drug gang violence. Lots of homicides in December, including a large-caliber machine gun attack on the police station in Port of Spain.
Trinidad has a similar story to the Guiana countries - about equally divided between Afro and East Indian ethnicities, 45% each, remaining are native Indians, Chinese, whites. And when I say that, all of them are comprised of mixes. Most of the Caribbean islands are a real melting pot.
Reading the Good Book recently, it struck me that the conquering imperial strategy of the Assyrians who sucked up the ten northern tribes of Israel was to disperse them among different cities outside of Israel and to replace and repopulate Ephraim/Northern Israel with people of diverse ethnicities (specifically, worshippers of diverse deities); in other words, to mix it up. "Replacement theory" is no racist fantasy; it remains a favorite strategy of "the powers that be" in the service of the Arch-enemy. At the Jubilee, on the other hand, debts are cancelled and slaves are supposed to return home. (It really is a very good book.)
Interesting history of the Guyanas. British Guyana was where Jonestown was located and that's about all I ever knew about its history. We once took a half-day excursion on a sail boat that was made up like a pirate vessel in the Caribbean and the first mate was from Guyana. It's a shame I didn't ask him about his background.
I read a depressing statistic about one of them -- one of the Guyanas has the second highest rate of suicide in the world. Preferred method: Ingesting insecticide. (Lesotho has the highest rate. And it is EXTREMELY high there.)
