Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

re When the Family Flourishes, Society Flourishes
Absolutely. You can't have a strong nation without strong families as its foundation. Biden regime grants protections to social security bureaucrats... the agreement is between the government and the union. Make the union go away as it was created by John Kennedy in 1962 by an executive order. No union equals no agreement.
Excuse my ignorance but surely no US administration is required to honour agreements made by a previous one?
Otherwise, what's the point of electing a new government? Pull their plugs. What are they gonna do? Go on strike? Not show up for work? Not a good way to DOGE a bullet.
JJM: Excuse my ignorance but surely no US administration is required to honour agreements made by a previous one?
The alternative is to say the government can’t enter into contracts. No, the alternative is to break contracts and pay the piper.
Or... simply reduce the work force as an economy measure, while honouring the contract for the remaining staff. Or... whatever executive/legislative option(s) the government deems acceptable to exercise. JJM: No, the alternative is to break contracts and pay the piper.
Sure. Of course, though doing so would tend to undermine the credibility of the United States when it abrogates binding contracts. The government could just renege on the national debt for that matter. JJM: Or... simply reduce the work force as an economy measure, while honouring the contract for the remaining staff. Which would disrupt Social Security, including checks being sent out. It may require congressional action as the civil service is a creation of Congress. "Trump's Notre Dame Appearance Means More Than You Think"
Ha! Do you know my first thought was: "So he's catching a Fighting Irish game. What's the big deal?" So now the snooty Euroweenies are making nice to Trump in the hope that he won't pull the plug on NATO and leave them to fight Putin themselves.
Want to Cut Federal Workers? Just Cut Spending.
QUOTE: . . . in 2020, grant and contract workers totaled more than 6.8 million. Regular federal workers? They totaled only 2.7 million (counting postal workers.) . . .Cutting the federal work force does not require any ornate arguments about the civil service or how many federal employees work from home. If the Trump administration is serious about cutting the federal workforce, it will focus on simply cutting federal spending. If federal spending falls significantly, millions of workers paid by federal contracts and grants will have to join the private sector. Moreover, millions of state and local government jobs will disappear as well, given that many of them are essentially federally funded positions. It’s not really any more complicated than that. https://mises.org/mises-wire/want-cut-federal-workers-just-cut-spending . . . feeblemind: If the Trump administration is serious about cutting the federal workforce, it will focus on simply cutting federal spending.
Much of that would require congressional action, such to end long-term military contracts. Or, the congress could just stop sending out Social Security checks while still collecting the payroll tax. Problem solved. With good management, half the money is wasted. You just have to identify which half. Problem solved. From "The Return of Realpolitik":
"... Trump’s style will be to cut deals narrowly perceived as beneficial to the United States." I'm struggling to see the problem here. Do countries regularly attempt to cut deals to their detriment? Reading further: "Much of the US policy establishment is similarly horrified by the prospect of an administration that promises to prioritise American interests with a doggedness, and even glee, rarely seen since the early republic." An American president promising to prioritize American interests? Horrors! Not Sure: Do countries regularly attempt to cut deals to their detriment?
It's long been consider to America's benefit to develop strong ties with other democratic state. Alliances have helped prevent an outbreak of another world war. These relationships have helped create the stable conditions necessary for global trade and prosperity. They act as a force multiplier. And trust being built over generations isn't something that should be cavalierly dispensed with. |
