Maggie's Farm

Next to raising two wonderful kids, son and daughter who have given us a handful of excellent grand kids, i think of the most pleasurable experiences I had years ago was raising and training my Brittany from a pup. His name was Happy and he was out of a nice line of great field dogs and he was fantastic. We did one field trial where we took second and that was enough for me, too much confusion and it good for those who like it.

My time was limited in those olden days, over twenty years ago and Happy and I made a lot of fun trips hunting quail in NW Texas, Pheasant in North Oklahoma about a quarter mile South of Kansas. A nice trip to Colorado where the sand burrs were rather bad and that dear old dog was so delightful. i had two more Brittanys after Happy and they were fine dogs but never as accomplished as my favorite Happy the Dog with a capital D.

In my old age i am too far along to start another gun dog and my last one moved on over three years ago however i still manage to get out on opening day for Texas Dove Hunting and I have about ten of those critters frozen to enjoy as we move on into fall.

Many years ago I would take a deer every year on a farm out of Crawford Texas and that was fun and now I am too old to process a deer in my kitchen and it costs too much for the commercial places to do it so those days are gone for me. I am now an upland bird hunter when I have the chance and that's enough for me.

I have wonderful memories of hunting over my fine dogs, especially my best dog and that's special, right along with watching my school age grand kids doing their things and doing well. I like being an old man with good memories of dogs, shotguns and trips with friends.
