Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: CA Gov. Newsom Signs Ban Against Political Deepfakes; Elon Musk Mercilessly Trolls Him With… Deepfakes . . . California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a strict new censorship law Tuesday that will make it illegal to produce or distribute AI political videos around election season. The law does not make deepfake political messages illegal, but just requires that a deepfake political message include a warning message, “This ___ has been manipulated and is not authentic.” These admin state figures have been manipulating and are not authentic.
Proving once again that there is nothing the left does that Zachriel will not defend. Ergo, Zachriel is a propagandist and should come with a warning.
B. Hammer: Proving once again that there is nothing the left does that Zachriel will not defend.
Our position is to establish demonstrable fact. If we are incorrect, then please provide the evidence. To get you started, see California Code of Civil Procedure, Section 35, Chapter 7, 20514(c). It's important to recognize that posting videos which show someone saying or doing something they didn't is deceptive and subject to reasonable regulation. QUOTE: then please provide the evidence. Nah, that would be treating you seriously, which I don't. The problem with your comment is the line you quote from the statute actually violates the 1st Amendment in itself, and further, in no way mitigates the other violations of the 1st Amendment. You don't deserve to treated respectfully for consistently making such arguments, and honestly, are often treated better than you deserve to be.

In the last five years, Kamala Harris, Tim Waltz, and Hillary Clinton have all advocated for legal restrictions on political speech. If you defend attacks on the 1st Amendment as you're doing here instead of defending the 1st Amendment, then that's just more evidence of your authortarian tendicies. So, you’re saying that if someone manipulates a video to falsely show you doing something heinous, even criminal, then posts it on social media, there is nothing the law can do to stop them. Just want to make sure we understand your position. "Um, it is a civil law."
Um, it's an unnecessary civil law, which is the entire point of the argument here. Libel and slander are already actionable. Try to keep up with what's actually under discussion. But what the hell, let's get the government involved even more in what people can say and do.

Tort is not adept enough to stop deepfake deception close to the election. Without some regulation, there would be no way to know what is a real video and what is a deepfake. Nefarious actors could flood social media with deepfakes. There's a real issue involved.

What's involved is far too much potential for abuse of the law "close to the election". Ask Alex Jones how adept tort is.
As goofy as we've seen them be, I trust a jury more than government.

Putting a label on deep fakes isn't that much of a burden.

It took years for the Sandy Hook families to stop Alex Jones from lying about their murdered children.

Does that include SNL and Mel Brooks movies?
Or Kamala Harris ads about Donald Trump and Project 2025? SK: Does that include SNL and Mel Brooks movies?
Parody is not covered by the law. SK: Or Kamala Harris ads about Donald Trump and Project 2025? Harris ads that use deepfake ("media that is digitally created or modified such that it would falsely appear to a reasonable person to be an authentic record of the actual speech or conduct of the individual depicted in the media") to create materially deceptive ads would be covered. "So, you’re saying that if someone manipulates a video to falsely show you doing something heinous, even criminal, then posts it on social media, there is nothing the law can do to stop them."
Sounds like SNL and Mel Brooks movies. Mark Zuckerberg said the Harris/Biden admin was pressuring him to spike "humor and satire", which I'm sure you'll defend as well.

Parody is explicitly excluded from the law. At worst, they have to label it to avoid confusion.

See reference to Zuckerberg above. The left can't help itself. Label comedy and parody? New editions of "A Modest Proposal" required to have a disclaimer! Old editions in libraries need a stamp! Dave Chappel wearing a hat that says, "Just kddin' around here, folks"! John Cleese having a serious talk before reruns of Monty Python! I get it now! It's a jobs program! Hell, labeling the old George Carlin stuff would provide employment for dozens! Just to be safe, I better get ahead of this: THE ABOVE IS MEANT AS HUMOR/SATIRE. PLEASE DO NOT ARREST, SUE, FOLD, SPINDLE, OR MUTILATE THE AUTHOR, WHO ONLY WISHES TO ENTERTAIN AND POINT OUT ABSURDITY WHERE HE SEES IT

Didn't know Jonathan Swift used deepfakes. (Parody is not covered by the law.) Pretending deepfakes don't constitute a problem doesn't make the problem go away.

You might be surprised to find that Swift didn't have the technology. Nor did Carlin or Cleese.
Accusing me of "pretending" deep fakes might not cause a problem doesn't make my concern about government overreach go away. (Funny how the left is doesn't even pretend to be concerned about that any more.) Once again, stop changing the subject. The biggest effort to use the deepfake phenomenon to influence an election has been the Harris/Biden admin's insistence that videos of old Joe's faltering behavior at events were an example of the right using...deepfakes...

SK: You might be surprised to find that Swift didn't have the technology. Nor did Carlin or Cleese.
It was your example. The law wouldn't cover Swift or Carlin or Cleese because 1) parody is not covered by the law; 2) none of them used deepfakes; 3) they weren't putting words in someone else's mouth as if they were words said by the King himself. SK: Accusing me of "pretending" deep fakes might not cause a problem doesn't make my concern about government overreach go away. Then what you might do is simply admit the problem exists and then propose a different solution. The current solution is to have a label attached, hardly a burdensome regulation. What do you suggest should happen when social media is flooded with believable but deceptive deepfakes right before the election? And why do you think a label for believable but deceptive deepfakes is so burdensome that you would allow that to happen?

The FDA should have NO authority to make any rule. They should only be allowed to 'recommend.' The "safe and effective" organization has proven its incompetence and needs to provide no further proof of that incompetence. Make Congress vote, and not the admin state.
The gray lady sowing dissention on race, gender and ethnicity... now where have I heard that before? Yea, Gramsci and company. What a surprise. They've been selling mis/mal information since at least their Walter Duranty days. Newsom banning deep fakes... That would mean the FBI, CIA, Mueller, DOJ and Hillary are now banned from operation in California. Sweden finally waking up to their invading multicultural fiasco. And perhaps, Europe figuring it out as well. QUOTE: Rubicon Crossed: White House Doubles Down on Trump Being a 'Threat' After Latest Brush With Death Trump has explicitly called for the termination of the Constitution. That makes him a threat to the Constitution. Consequently, calling him a threat is warranted. The solution is political. Brutus isn't remembered for saving the Roman Republic, but for delivering the final fatal dagger to it. Do look up the times that a president can declare martial law and set the Constitution aside. And also how many times it has been called in our History. (at least 68 times according to the Brennen Center)
I will read your comment with the same attention to detail and attitude that you read into Trumps’ post: Trump deserves what ever bad that befalls him.
Are you part of the 28% of democrats that think the nation would be better if Trump had been killed? That is a rhetorical question for the Quibble-DickZ. Right???
B. Hammer: Are you part of the 28% of democrats that think the nation would be better if Trump had been killed?
Repeating to what you just replied: The solution is political. Brutus isn't remembered for saving the Roman Republic, but for delivering the final fatal dagger to it. The first statement directly addresses the point. The second statement is also clear if you remember from your history that Brutus was trying to save the Republic from the dictatorship of Caesar by assassinating Caesar. QUOTE: It's pretty clear where the government stands on the situation in Springfield OH The first example, "a video of a Haitian doing a 'Biden' on an 11 year old in a convenience store" occurred in Chile, not Springfield. QUOTE: Any protest against the actions, yes, the ACTIONS, of these invaders is seen by the government as a hate crime. So, a person does something bad in Chile, so you persecute law-abiding Haitian immigrants in Ohio. That's the very definition of racial hatred. Send them back to Haiti. They are not a functional culture and fit in nowhere else.
From what I understand, the pagers blew up because of a hack that allowed them to over tax the battery till it got hot enough to explode. Pretty cool, eh?
That being the case, if it can be done to pagers, couldn't it also be done to cell phones, laptops, electric cars, or basically anything with a lithium-ion battery? Now it starts to sound more sinister. Best comment:
"I suspect a lot of Hezbollah will be dressing as pirates for Halloween". Heh. The suspicion is that RDX explosives were in the appliances.
BTW. Did anyone catch the Trump appearance on Gutfeld last night? Whether you support him or not the show was outstanding. And hilarious too.
"The agency's proposed rule... would prohibit dried tart cherries and cranberries from being called healthy if they contain added sugar."
Your body runs on sugar. 100% of the carbs you eat are converted to sugar before they can be absorbed from the intestines. When someone runs the marathon and breaks a record that was sugar. If you were to eat no carbs at all your body will convert fat and the protein in your muscle to sugar just to continue essential bodily functions. Without sugar you die. It is rather stupid to label sugar as unhealthy. "The Most Important Job in the World - Introducing Raising Parents with Emily Oster—a new podcast with the brilliant economist and parenting guru."
